Lovely room, I'm never a huge fan of rugs over tables because of cleaning and getting chair legs caught. But if you found one large enough and compatible with the space it would certainly work.
It will be hard to find a rug that will tone in. Your dining chairs are a very busy fabric and the light colour in them looks way more white than the creams in the rest of the room. A rug for there would need to be very plain and I think a cream would look wrong with the chairs and a white would look wrong with rest of room. But it could just be the way the chair fabric is showing on my screen and the lighting of the photo.
