where to put a pillar support in kitchen?
I have been advised I need a support pillar in my kitchen, as knocking down internal walls to create an open plan kitchen/living/dining room. The removals are in red and the island is there for show. The pillar needs to be located close to the number 3 in the middle of the image...but I don't know how to incorporate it?! Stand alone?! Made into a feature?! Attached to a peninsula?!
Any ideas or images gratefully received! Thank you

Comments (31)I would suggest keeping the brick fire place with a clean up to keep the character. Agree paint the ceiling panels white however keep the beams as the are (if in good condition) to keep the character of the home. Paint the remaining walls white or light grey. The 1/2 brick white wall and timber paneling on the right side does need to come out to help you create the open plan space you are craving. The kitchen area - I'm not sure of size judging by the photo - I would suggest storage/cabinets the full length of the back wall to the windows where the dinning table is and cabinets/draws under the window also. Giving you plenty of storage for the home. I would suggest an island bench with a lower section to use as a dinning table. All your storage is in one place and allowing you to remove the storage you have across the bottom window in the lounge room. giving you more space and more light in the room. Or paint them white also. If you can remove the window coverings and replace with lighter roller blinds that disappear in the white walls or even white block out curtains. Comments (11)Thanks everyone - your comments and diagrams have given me plenty of ideas I hadn't considered. Perhaps shifting the wall is a little drastic! I'm now thinking of going a long U shape like this. I'll add a few upper cabinets on the left side too for the most frequently used stuff from the pantry (as the pantry is still a distance from the stove/oven). The fridge as you can see is now right amongst the action. We also have a chest freezer hiding out in the laundry which I can move into the old fridge space...alternatively I might convert it to a computer workstation as suggested. I'm leaning towards a peninsula rather than an island, just because I feel like it will give me a slightly more efficient/seamless work space, and we don't expect seating at at the island/peninsula will get used much given how close the dining table is. Comments (14)I was just thinking of making more of a substantial open living space, in terms of the extra floor space to the east, as I can see it being the part of the house that we would be in all the time. In terms of the north side, we are on a corner block and so there is a 4 metre setback on that side, which we are already at. I don't know much about these things, but I assume that wouldn't be able to be changed. I am planning a nice garden on that side of the house anyway, which I am excited about, and we like to have the space all around the house (i.e. no fences close to any of our windows, giving the feeling of privacy and space in a modest suburban block). The other thing I think of a lot is regarding passive solar design principles, and having our house oriented the way it is (West facing), I am reluctant to do anything too major unless we can really capitalise on this. Having the bedrooms on the northern side does work really well for us at the moment, as we use them a lot - with small children napping and my husbands office being on that side. Although that will change when the kids grow up... I'm hoping we can at least add some skylights or something like that into the extension area/kitchen in order to bring in more light. last yearI would have thought a structural engineer or builder would advise on that? My sister’s beam was within the peninsula. The only picture I have is this one of the not quite finished kitchen.

last yearit looks like you could have a better/bigger kitchen design using the LH wall, rotate the island and include a 'feature' pillar in the island. you need to consider the kitchen and other furniture items that will be used in the space to help with the overall design - so more cohesive.

last yearHi, whilst I agree that another opinion and hopefully no pillar would be the best solution, you asked for ideas so here are two. In one of them what I’ve done is just cut and paste your existing kitchen plan to show you that the island could be lined up underneath the existing rear wall where a pillar would be needed. However this would affect the windows/doors arrangement at the rear wall. If you do need a pillar in the space then the rear wall plan would probably be better revisited to address the new flow/traffic lines through the space.
