Is having a prep sink on the island a good idea?
Comments (29)Different strokes for different folks, as they say. We have a butlers pantry, smallish, with a sink in it. The pantry has become effectively a walk-in pantry, with storage, a wine fridge and the toaster and microwave. It's very useful, but we almost never use the sink because there isn't enough practical counterspace and because, well, who wants to do dishes in a closet? We also have an island, with a single basin sink in it, and of course the dishwasher. That's where we do prep, and it works just fine for us. We can watch TV while pealing spuds or washing those dishes that don't go into the dishwasher. Even with the sink, there's still plenty of prep space, and we have a good work triangle between sink, oven on the wall directly behind it, and fridge, oven and pantry on the end wall. In practical terms, the arrangement works for us. When we entertain, we clean up and load the dishwasher as we go, dump the pots and pans in the butler's pantry, wipe off the bench, and we're good to go. And since it's only a single basin undermount sink, the look is clean enough for us....See MoreYour thoughts on our single-storey design

We rotate vanities to be in line with robes in WIR - we can change the robe to makeup table & drawers with chair going underneath of its bench. Please see attached sketch. By rotating vanity it looks more spacious and practical ! What is your thoughts siriuskey? Cheers...See MoreShould I install a sink in my kitchen island?
Comments (31)Hi Bianca, I have just seen your post. I personally think the best answer to your question will depend on a few other considerations because it really depends on the kitchen layout as a whole. Considerations may include; how will this affect the work flow in your Kitchen and what are the alternative positions available to you? Importantly; how big is your island going to be; an Island can be a great space for food preparation, meal plating, as well as the island being a social space for family as well as when entertaining. When placing the Sink in an island you may consider a sink also needs adequate additional space each side of it for the various functions it is used for; whereby placing a sink in a small Island can sometimes take away from the other benefits it provides. There is actually no clear yes or no answer, but to consider your Kitchen layout, appliance placements and its work flow as a whole. With the other things you have already mentioned here, I hope this extra helps in your decision process....See Morehuge empty space between kitchen and family room
Comments (22)The laundry has 2 doors , which means 1/3rd of the shown space isn't useful . Kate has suggested having the external door out from the 'gap' , which makes sense , and I assume a window above the tub or similar for light ? Having the external door opening outwards ( no matter where you position it ) means you get more interior space too , but also a bit easier to seal for wind and rain too . But if you moved the laundry wall 'right' , and had an outwardly opening door from the laundry to the WIP 'foyer' ( the space outside the WIP can't really be used except for access ) you'd have a smaller laundry footprint , but be able to have more storage , maybe a drop down ironing board etc too . But also , I wonder if you'd be better to make the WIP effectively 2 parts -- one that gets the natural light from the glass door , and then move the wall further in so the existing one that is darker for light sensitive items ? It may look less tidy , but conversely the existing design is going to mean the pantry will always be quite dark , unless you add a skylight or similar ? just a thought ....See MoreKate
