Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

White and black cork flooring in a kitchen?

Has anyone installed coloured cork flooring in a kitchen? I'm tempted by the white and black chequered corka flooring from the Colour Flooring Company. It looks great in the photos, and the sample is nice. However, I'm a bit worried that the white and black colour is going against the natural character of the material. A while and black floor with brown scuffs where the finish has worn off doesn't sound all that appealing.

Im not sure, black and white flooring isn’t to my taste. Looks like an advert for Flash. A more hardwearing choice would be porcelain if you want something tougher.

I would not go for cork based flooring and agree that the colours are a bit flash ad-ish. People use porcelain tiles in bathrooms for a good reason.

There are heaps of lines, lines, lines already "featured" in this area! The overhead cabinets, shutter, drawers, front of breakfast bar cabinetry, sandstone wall ... By going black grout - you will be drawing attention to and emphasizing the overload of lines ... By going black grout, you may have to deal with the black and white giving you cross-eyes while cooking! So - obviously - I'm cheering for the "go white" team!

We are doing a new kitchen with antique white shaker cupboards & drawers and I'm thinking a painted, pressed metal splashback behind a free standing 90cm heritage style electric cooker and the subway tiles elsewhere. We are doing an oiled natural shaped huon pine slab for the main benchtop.

Hi Adriana, You can have whatever you want and works with your style. If you go with tiles then invest the extra money in epoxy grout that will make cleaning a great deal easier - regardless of what colour/style you go for. Dark grout with white tiles is quite modern and makes cleaning grout a little easier - personally, I don't favour it but that's just personal taste. I would check the ease of cleaning on any matt tile. To bring in warmth to your kitchen (as black and white can be a bit stark sometimes) look at bringing some colour in - even metallics in silver, bronze or copper or even opalescent tiles can be gorgeous and can also help bounce light in a subtle way back into your room while giving you a luxury look with depth and interest. Go to your tile supplier and ask for samples so that you can take them home and put them in the space and get a sense of how they'll work - sometimes the way they look away from the tile shop is completely different to how they look in the shop. Don't go with white. While it is easy to replace door fronts and drawer fronts you won't be able to replace the tall vertical panels adjacent to the fridge recess and the microwave recess without pulling out half of your cabinetwork. If you went with a white you wouldn't be able to match the same white as these vertical panels, and the new white would look off next to the old white or vice versa! I'm afraid there is no easy solution that will make the new doors blend in with the old vertical panels, so I would go with a bold contrast colour block that looks good with the white vertical panels, as well as the black granite. Perhaps consider a Piet Mondrian inspired kitchen facelift, by introducing some black edging to the vertical cabinets and a careful composition of blocks of primary colours? For those of us that worry that tiled floors are hard and uncomfortable to stand on while cooking, worry that they are cold underfoot, worry that they chip or crack if you drop anything cork seems like a super idea.

I suspect the colour is dyed/stained meaning it goes all the way through and won’t rub off- so I think you just need to satisfy yourself that it’s practical and easy to clean. And if it were me I would wonder if black and white is too severe and if chocolate brown and pale grey might be easier to live with
