Use Houzz and Pintrest to save pictures of rooms you like. You’ll see themes of your desired style emerge. You can then create a mood board and we can help with furniture placement and any extras. You’ll be wasting money if you start purchasing furniture without a plan for the whole area.
If it is your apartment, not rented, I would start with the floors. Either get the carpet professionally cleaned or rip it up and get engineered boards or hybrid floor installed. What is your style? As bigreader said, do a mood board to get your favourite photos. Then a theme will start to show through. Is this an open plan living area which includes a dining area and kitchen, or is this a stand alone living room, or bedroom? What are the dimensions of the room, width and length. Where are tv points on walls? How is the room used, if a lounge, do you need a television and dining suite? Once you know your theme, and we know what needs to be in the space then the suggestions will be easy to make.
