unless essential, the opening under the stairs should be permanently enclosed (access from the other side if necessary) and when the arched doorway is renovated make the opening a little narrower so any framing does not encroach on the structure of the stairs and timber treads would be ideal with slim steel or glass balustrades and timber handrails starting from about the second step up from the floor... the are many inspiring photos on HOUZZ

Thank you all for your input. Yes he has definitely done this to save on costs and I agree the contract states hardwood staircase, so he is in the wrong. The question now is what is my best option. 1) dismantle and start again 2) ask him to paint the riser white and cut away the wall stringer to give an appearance similar to photo below (accepting the fact that the pine riser will not be as hardy). I understand that this might be about my personal preference but the question is whether or not a staircase similar to the below photo can be created from the staircase that I currently have or if it would just be best to dismantle and have a nice complete hardwood staircase.
