The edging in this particular case is steel, 3/16" thick by 4" high. When against a lawn edge, steel is less noticeable, a lot stronger (naturally), and resists movement more than vinyl throughout the seasons. If your taller drifts of plants require root or massing separation, then vinyl would work just as well.
