I think midcentury is a pretty useful style to understand - because so many rooms and styles on Houzz seem to use it. Same goes for craftsman (which in Australia is more likely called country).

I have been trying to teach Aussie to Americans. ;) many know about drop bears now.

I want to know what some of the 600 terms Aussie Houzz had to "convert" for their launch. No offence to our US & UK friends, but sometimes I think we Aussies are better at knowing what people are talking about, even if they are using different terminology.

I may be on a different page here, but it would be helpful to have translations of terminology particulary when we use slang. Us and Oz may know
What soffits are in the trade, but to everyday ppl we call them eaves.
Siding is what we know as cladding etc.
As far as interiors go builders finishes are different wherever you go.
Architraves and skirting are not the same, although you could use either for both purposes like architrave frame windows and doors whereas skirting boards go around a rooms perimeter at floor level, you can use skirting for architrave to get a different profile. Cornice in Oz is generally plaster concealing the transition from wall to roof, and has different profiles available, in Australia its a standard ing, in US crown moulding is like cornice, although it's not in every home, they often use it in cabinetry instead.

vernacular - a fancy word used by architects to describe a typical aussie domestic or utilitarian building in a rather fancy way e.g. a vintage corrugated iron farm shed is typical of the term "Australian vernacular" (BTW I think architects are very gifted and necessary people! ; ) These basic farm houses and sheds have been a great source of inspiration.

How long is a piece of string?! Ok, I'll have a crack...

* glazing (windows)

* squares vs square metres... the ratio is 10 square metres to one square btw

* finishes - matt / flat vs gloss and everything in between

* tiles - rectified / square edge vs regular pillow top / bull nose

* ceiling finish - vaulted, shadowline, square set, corniced

* toilets - closed coupled, concealed, wall faced, connector (I still don't understand the difference)

* roof line - gable, dutch gable, conventional hip roof (e.g. pyramid-ish)

* architectural styles - Federation, Californian bungalow, mid-century modern, art deco, mediterranean, contemporary, modern

Craftsman as a style is more related to what Australians call Californian Bungalow. It originated in the British Arts and Crafts movement in the 1890s but was popularised in America by The Craftsman Magazine , founded in 1901 by Gustav Stickley.

Experts say do not engage with a troll. We have had a few since I've been on Houzz, perhaps the oddest was the man who posted raw meat. That wasn't nice. Trolls should just be flagged.

What does TSFP mean?

It means Too small for penguins, and is made up in a small group on US Houzz.
