Tick-Tock: Timeless Ways With Clocks
Clocks aren't just good for telling the time – they can also be star attractions in any area of the house
Whether your look is Mid-century Modern, cutting-edge contemporary or classic Federation, clocks can pinpoint an era with ease. Adding character is a snap with the right timepiece, and it can be as over the top in size as you want it to be. DIY just the look you want or search for an antique-style number that fits the bill – a clock could provide that finishing touch you’ve been waiting for.
Style icon. A clock can add instant poise and polish to a Mid-century Modern room, just as it can to other decorating styles. Iconic clock designs like these have withstood the test of time and are almost as sought after now as they were in their heyday.
DIY time. You can create just about any style you want if you make a clock yourself. Clock kits are widely available from craft shops or online, and the numbers can be made from just about anything you choose. Just make sure you get the spacing between each number right to avoid an amateur look.
Red alert. Going bold with colour can make any clock stand out, but this one is especially effective for its shape and size – ideal for the window dimensions on either side.
Parisian chic. What is it about French clocks that are so appealing? This one’s good looks have earned it a centrestage position in this lovely lounge room.
Schoolhouse rock. A vintage clock is an unexpected but delightful addition to a wall-mounted collection like this one.
Scene stealer. The right kind of clock can complement an elegant dining setting perfectly.
Play time. Getting the kids out of the house on time is a challenge for the most organised of families, so why not try to put more of the responsibility in their hands with a fun clock mounted somewhere they will notice it? Colours are just the thing for little ones not yet telling the time to figure out how they’re tracking – when the big hand strikes pink, for example, it’s time to hit the road.
Time-worn texture. An oversize clock that looks to have had a long history works wonderfully with the exposed brickwork in this Industrial-style warehouse conversion. It doesn’t really matter if a clock is authentically old or not. Reproductions can sometimes be better than the real thing.
Vintage charm. This clock has been cleverly positioned to tie in with an Art Deco mirror collection in an irresistible room rich in beach-cottage chic.
