I will be a little bit presumptuous by offering some advice on helping you to raise your child in touch with nature in this age full of all the electronic lures that keep the kids indoors. or, when outdoors, glued to a small screen, rather than the glory that surrounds them. i put the bathroom next to the master to have the bathroom door off the short hallway rather than opening into the retreat and if you draw a line across the floor in your original plans to make a path where you will walk and leave space for furniture you will see that despite the size of the retreat it was just like a big hallway with no where for comfortable furniture arrangements and i would double check with the Solar panel supplier to confirm the ideal roof angle... double glazed windows (or thermal break double glazed are better but much more expensive) but windows can't exclude the worst of the summer heat without external window coverings and big areas of east and west glass will impact your compulsory BASIX ratings and playpens and baby gates across the top and bottom of the stairs makes everyone safer and also useful to keep small kids out of open plan kitchens

Pay attention to the lighting in kitchen and bathrooms. These need to be over the benches and vanity. A light in centre of room casts shadow of person at bench. A small bathroom one light is enough but you need to decide on what light. In my bathroom I have 2 downlights over long vanity to even the light and one over bath on seperate switch so I can change the ambience. In my large powder room I just have a strip light over vanity. If you love makeup then lights each side of mirror is needed for more even light. Don’t underlight the kitchen. I have 2 downlights over island and 3 spread around kitchen and four in dining, With 3 switches creating zones. Would love to have pendants Over bench and dining instead of downlights. My bedroom and lounge had no ceiling light at all, with lamps in lounge and wall lights on side plus a download over wardrobe. I now have a pendant in lounge for decoration but rarely turn it on. Please go to somewhere like beacon lighting with your plan for advice.

Hi Laura, I also love your inspiration photo. I think you're on the right track for what you want. It looks like an early summer image due to the jacaranda flowering so I would try and get a bit more colour in the planting and spread your flowering season to be as long as you can by choosing winter, spring and summer flowering plants. It appears that you have the ability to build one side of the garden up as you have a foudation below the fence. You shouldn't build it up in front of the actual fence as it will eventually rust out. If you do build it up in part, you could build seating into this to make two uses out of the retaining. You could intersperse this with the cortens to reduce the cost as that wont work so well for seating. Recycled timber could do the job and maybe mix with some gabions, which you can do on the cheap yourself if you have a source of rubble or stones. C.
