Carpet. Ugly, grey, literally-threadbare carpet. It is something we intend to get rid of, but carpet here isn't easy, in choice or available installers. But we'll go again with it, with something industrial-strength like we had at a previous house, a warm, dark brown most likely, to deal with the dogs and the dirt and the everything else that still manages to get inside past the mudroom.

Hi, I have a dark rug on my tiles (see photo) and I wished I had picked a lighter one. I feel that it cuts off the room as I like a flow on effect. My advice is don't rush and buy the first one. Lighter ones can be cosy also.

I think that you should consider the longevity of the '90's plum carpet. Don't base you choice based on that carpet colour as if it is already 25 years old, and will have faded from its original colour. It may need replacement within the next ten years. You won't be able to match the existing colour with a new carpet. Have you considered replacing the carpet with a consistent floor finish through both rooms? Beautiful work. Love the detail like the marble on the book shelves. I came across this in a search for how to put colour in a kitchen and this is a stunner. All the colours and textures are coordinated well - easy on the eye unlike some colourful kitchens. Love the wallpaper choice in laun and bathroom too. This kitchen seems to have come under fire for not being a cook's kitchen but it would work for me and I’ve been a pro cook in my life. That wide island is fabulous.
