Thank you so much. I am standing in my kitchen looking at my shelves and you are so right. Why are all my items so short?? Rookie mistake. I will some height and depth. The rug is bring updated. I'm thinking something with creams or even tan and yes bigger is way better. I think I'll swap the chairs and couch as suggested. I like the light that comes in from that window when the chairs are there but I do think the space looks better with the chairs across from the fireplace . And we are looking for bigger, more comfy (but still modern) chairs diff colour. Thank you again!!

My other bush of Rhodys, taken today, I'm on top of the steps, it's about 6 ft. I've cut them back each year, they were huge when I moved in. Not good to have huge bushes near the house if there's a bushfire. The first bush has finished flowering. It's a hotter pink.

You could go one of three ways 1) explore if you are in a heritage zone and your council gives grants to restore/reinstate heritage features. In which case that’ll help the $ kitty and identify colours from that era 2) strip the uprights/pillars and doors back to natural timber and seal them as a nice soft contrast to the cottage green. Can also pay company’s to dip your doors to strip paint off for you. 3) get out the colour wheel and get a complementary white and charcoal to your cottage green. Doors & frames charcoal. Walls white.

I'd start with the basics . The fences , which seem to enclose 3 sides , let the place down . I'd go with 4 or 5 10 litre pails of fence stain , in charcoal/black -- I dislike Brown ( too 70's ) but I don't think it would suit anyway . Then some colour , and 1 focal piece . I'm in NZ , so not sure plants to recommend , but maybe a palm ( or two or three of differing heights ) as your focal point , and some colourful semi-tropical plants . The existing garden along the fence probably stain the low wall in the same charcoal black , to tie in with the fence , but add a lot of light / white pebbles , shells and similar -- any coloured plants or flowers will be highlighted . Then , depending on budget , build in a barbeque , with paving . off the covered area , and add a sail shade -- set up so it isn't over the barbeque area , and use a brighter colour canvas -- that yellow 'box' that is in the 3rd picture of yours stands out -- a sail in that colour , or mid orange or red , a reasonably vibrant green or blue , or even a neutral grey , will add colour but also distract the eye from the rectangular shape of your house . From there -- do what you like / can afford . The sky is the limit -- playground , pool , spa , water feature , sculpture -- wherever your taste takes you .
