hard to tell from the pic, but one of a couple of things could be the culprit...

1. Adhesive hasn't been cleaned out from gaps when wet and grout is too thin in places because of it, creating a shadow behind and darkening up the grout.

2. Tiles are not flat and what you are seeing is shadowing in the bowed section or mismatched edges.

3. Dirty grout or the tiles weren't clean before being grouted and the dust or dirt has been washed into the grout.

4. The cleaning method is at fault. If you use a blue cloth on white grout you will discolour the grout (because it is porous).

The first option usually only happens in odd spots so I suspect the cloth used in cleaning has discoloured the grout. This is the culprit most of the time.

We usually use ONCE OVER to do the first clean with a light coloured cloth and always use white cloths on white tiles from then on.

I think 2 might be contributing, but the grout is definitely grey, it is not a trick of the light.

3 is the most likely I feel, althoug I don't understand why the grout looked white until it was wet the first time and has been grey since, if they were dirty all along.

The tiles were not cleaned with a blue cloth, although that is a good point.

Is there some sort of service where you can get a third party to come and give their optinion on cause and treatment? Is there such a thing as a grout rep who can come and advise on what they think the problem is? I just want to get this fixed. I'm over worrying about putting blame on anyone.

I don't see why it is your problem. The tiler laid the tiles and supplied the grout?

You built a new house. Put the problem back onto your builder to fix. You do not need to consult experts, unless the builder does not fix it for you. Don't take no for an answer, or believe and b***it stories or excuses. It does not matter whose fault it is, it just needs to be fixed.

Well my husband has managed the build, and we have employed the (professional) directly. Yes the tiler laid them and supplied the grout.

Its my problem because the tiler doesn't seem to know what the problem is. I want to access someone who will be able to tell me and sort it out.

the simplest solution is to check which brand of grout it is and call the rep. No doubt they will have seen it before and have some input.
