Will adding casual dining make this space too cramped?

Torn as to whether I should add a casual dining space to my open plan living area. I have a formal dining room but not keen on letting my babies eat/hurl food in there. Outdoor eating isn't practical for winter so I think I'd like a small casual dining setting for the 4 of us.

my Pic shows my creative cut out & chairs for a 1200mm table (I'm thinking glass & new chairs) so there is space. But will it look ok or like I c rammed everything in and I should have more empty space?

if I don't put casual dining I'll need to out a console as it's the first space you see (at end of hallway) from the front door.

lovely room..looks good already but consider downsizing to backless stools that would fit under the counter for less clutter with a round table and chairs

Not at all! I think it would look great. I would consider a small round 1000mm marble tulip table for the space. It comfortably sits 4 people and takes up very little space :)

Refer to your fridge specs before you close anything in. Fair Trading laws in this country have obsoleted warranties. There is now a sliding scale of reasonable expectation on consumer items which means manufacturers will rely on their tech specs more than ever. Check what minimum clearance your fridge officially needs on the sides and above the machine for ventilation before doing anything. Get your lighting working for you. Choose a 'warm white' lamp - not daylight or cool white. Cool whites kill off the warmer hues and makes things appear cold. Change, add or move your lighting to have two small gimbled ceiling lights wash down the face of the joinery instead of one bright light focussed on the fridge. Lighting can make a poor space look great or a great space look poor.

Hi all as an update, we now own the unit (subject to settlement) and have been in with a builder. The discrepancy in the original kitchen measurements is that the floorplan has been incorrectly drawn. Attached is my update, as you can see the kitchen wall is not flush with the adjoining wall, hence the difference in width. Now we do really need ideas!!!! We are thinking about a kitchen like this too with similar flooring.

What is in the second photo, a power point? And you think the tv socket is going to be in that same wall? Then that is where the entertainment unit goes. Is that the only power point? When you buy your entertainment unit choose something which allows access for plugging in the vacuum cleaner. Unless you have a rechargeable vac which doesn't need a power point. With hard flooring perhaps you will mop more than vac. Although if you want to soften or warm the space you might have a rug? I didn't understand "combination of bright and neutral colours" until I looked at your Idea Book. You have some lovely pictures there. Do you have any artworks yet? That might influence which colours you repeat throughout your space. The grey sofas are probably the most versatile and timeless, and something like that might be the easiest to source in a size and configuration to suit your needs.

I think a little round table would look lovely. As oklouise said, low stools at the bench could complete the look!

Thanks guys. i've been unable to find a 100cm table that isn't too modern & i'm going for a french/hamptons look (with a splash of deco). I love these chairs so was thinking these with one of these 2 tables, but they're both 120cm..unless anyone has some less modern smaller tables?

Both of these are from IKEA. I love the turned base one. It's 110cm diameter and extendable.

I think a glass table top is the way to go when you are concerned with the visual look of a smaller room.

How do you watch TV in the room? It almost looks like the sofa is too far forward to be able to see the TV.

I'd personally space out the sofas, etc a bit more and orientate them to view the TV (which is presumably the primary purpose of the room). There are some great "baby seats" which attach to bench tops which would provide somewhere for the baby to sit and throw food. Otherwise, lots of high chairs have table / tray sections as well.

Milray Park I wish they had a thumbs down icon. This is a place to share views not to advertise. How about you prove your credentials and actually give some advice like other pro's do. This cut and paste comment is boring and not doing your business plan any good at all.

I think you have several options here.

1. Have a small round table and chairs that are light in frame - as you may end up lifting them around and also to lift the area visually- the ones you have chosen could look heavy and block light. I would also avoid fabric chairs while you have little ones.

2. In the shorter term until you use your other more formal space utilise a high chair and the breakfast bar.

3. Find an easily washable throw and place it over the couch and place a rectangular table that backs onto the sofa with the chairs one on each end and two on the side - this would ensure you retain the flow to the outside of the house.

I think the IKEA turned base table looks great. I'd stay away from glass top with kids......and fabric chairs could be a nightmare. As suggested a less bulky chair, even something with colour would work.
I always preferred a table to a counter for family meals. Stools rather than chairs at counter would open the area up.

I agree with jpfox. Glass tables are a nightmare with kids. You'll be constantly removing fingers prints and food from on top and underneath.
