Yes, absolutely helpful to visualise!
No, we just rely on 2D mood boards.

Would you consider building a home using Passive Solar Design?
Comments (50)After I had finished my Archi Masters I was working for an architecture firm who also did a small amount of work for a volume builder. They were actually a pretty good quality builder and at least got the orientation of their 'pre-designed' plans correct. We had the ability to make minor changes to every job and it pained me to see so many simple to implement passive options not being incorporated. Had most of their clients known that they would be saving MONEY over the longterm by making a few minor changes to suit their site, they all would have done it. The problem is unless someone can sell this idea to them as a financial/lifestyle choice, many just think it is about saving the world. It is a no-brainer if you have in interest in it, but for those who don't know, there is no-one there selling it to them, especially on the lower end of the market....See Morekitchen design dilemma - i want everything in a small kitchen!
Comments (25)Hi Mike and Emma Hope you are slowly but surely getting there... may I make some comments/suggestions that you may or not take on board, but hopefully it may at least give you some ideas/options... Going through a new build ourselves at the moment, and for what it's worth, here's what I personally think: A. Work with what you've got: - additional plumbing work, gas work etc may not be necessary and (particularly gas) can be costly when you're trying to work around existing walls, floors, etc, and as much as possible utilise the existing connections... after whatever you can save here and there, you can spend on nicer cabinetery, gadgets, finishes, etc :) B. Avoid unnecessry structural work: - removing the kitchen/living wall is a must (more space, light, etc) but removing the laundry wall is an unncessary added cost (may even require costly additional strutural support) - putting up a plastered wall on the other hand is inexpensive, allows you to redefine different zones and relocate doors/openings where required (*note: avoid hinged doors in small spaces as you have to allow for wasted space to open door - suggest cavity sliding doors, easy to incorporate in a new wall) C. Don't sacrifice functionality and natural light for design - love full height floor to ceiling cabinets, very much on trend... but they also tend to bring the walls in, which you want to avoid in an already small space... they will also block out more natural ligtht from the only window to the living and breakfast bench (meals area)... not to mention seated guests would be staring at a cabinet tower and fridge - on the other hand a walk in pantry (not that much of a walk in a small space) is also very much on trend, provides more storage and... as entertaining guests in open plan livings tends to happen more in the kitchen... it provides a good hiding place for unsightly items, including frigges... (an underbench bar fridge in the kitchen can easily keep those beers cold... though do consider that means sacrificing some cabinet space) - constantly wiping off the floors from dripping wet dishes across the kictchen from the sink to the dishwaser on the other side bench would personally drive me mad after a while... the dishwasher can easily be connected to the existing sink water and waste points through the cabinerty... any half decent plumber should be able to do that... ON THAT NOTE... or should I say those notes... I know I got a bit carried away :) ... if it were me, here's an idea of what I would try to achieve ......See MoreWhat are the absolute must-haves in your new kitchen?
Comments (6)Hi Complete Kitchens....Yes, I realise that 20k could get a good standard kitchen (our own one recently done was about 26k including scullery), I'm more talking about the ones that talk about doing kitchen, bathroom, painting and even moving some walls on 20k. What my point was, is its great when people like you actually give an idea of a cost of a project - it's easy to get fired up with inspiration and then get thoroughly dissapointed when reality hits! Things are expensive these days and I think for some who may not have done any renovations to their house for years, they don't really have a lot of idea of the costs involved....See MoreHow do we soften this monstrosity?
Comments (68)Externally , the front fence and gate is now black . Visually , thats about it . That sounds pretty slack , and it sort of is . We have 3 orange market umbrellas for upstairs , but even right now they are inside -- tey were outside until the rain came ! Inside we have a second yellow hoist up and running and certified , lots of workbenchs , lots of axle stands -- in fact lots of cars , and more than a dozen guys and girls working there . Oh , and 4 'old' ( decommissioned ) 40ft containers -- 2 of them are painted yellow , the other 2 will be soon . A 3rd hoist is in parts and at the powdercoaters . Slowly but surely its being transformed -- by this summer , we'll have around 18 working in this premises . Over summer , we will get the sailcloth done 'upstairs' , and I'm keen to do a vertical garden , and those Corten panels out the front , and the big orange pots . Our main shop ( and our logo etc ) has gotten more orange furniture and accessories , and this front area has some desks and chairs and orange accessories , but theres no fulltime office or reception people here . Like a lot of people with good intentions , I'll revert to that well-known saying -- good things take time haha !...See MoreUser
