Modern Suburban House · More Info

My friend has bought land in a property development in our regional town centre, and I have been horrified by the extent to which the developer can intrude on what can be done on that land, seemingly for all eternity. Things like no front fences allowed (making it difficult for small kids and animals to play safely in the front yard), garden sheds can only be constructed out of the same building materials as the residence, etc etc.

Australians used to be rugged individualists, who would thumb their noses at the idea that someone could tell them what and how to build on their patch of land. Are we turning into meek little sheep, herded into communities where the houses are all variations on the developer's idea of taste?

Property developers put a lot of money in and have the right to dictate terms to the purchasers.
Property developers go too far in their restrictions, and for too long.
Uniformity is appealing, but not too much.
We are all individuals , and should be allowed to do what we want on our land.
