Design help! Living space

Hi everybody,

My partner and I are have a huge dilemma as to what furniture to get for our open plan living fire place area. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to position furniture? Including lounges? We were thinking of putting a lounge against the wall where the cupboard is as we don't use that cupboard anyways an plan on closing it in. Please send through any ideas!

We use the room for relaxing in front of fire and drinking tea!. There is a small TV to the left of fire place but we don't use it very often as we have another lounge room. It's just my partner and I however we would like to sit 4 people encase we have friends over.

Thanks everyone, sorry for the late reply, we have been away. I've measured the distance in the proposed bathroom from the walls to the sides of the window architraves on the 3420mm wall - this space is only 620mm each side, so too narrow for as shower to be run across. It's also 900 high from the floor. In regards to the light over the staircase - let's just say that one of us thought it was too low all along but you know, happy w.... you get the idea. We might re visit that hopefully. That said, I've installed step lighting in the stairwell to compensate. Really great to see some new ideas we haven't thought of for the bathroom though! My concern with yours @oklouise (in adition to the window now interfering with the shower) - is the room with the bath/shower going to be too small? I love the idea of having seperation from the bathroom and the toilet/vanity, but it feels like it would be back to being a couple of tiny rooms just like the current main bathroom is, and for the size of the house, we were hoping for something that felt larger and more spacious, with lots of light. What are your thoughts?

I wouldn't lower the larger TV , even though technically it is a bit high if everyone is sitting , especially children . On a plain wall , it would look a bit funny mounted lower ( too much plain wall above it ) , so its a compromise between looks and technically correct . But also , with the smaller TV over by the kitchen , I'd want to keep the 2 at approx the same eye level . Just as an aside Rob ( the OP ) I have done a similar setup , but I have used Picture In Picture to have my front security camera in the bottom corner of either or both TV's if I want , and by connecting it via 'input 2' rather than an HDMI hub , I can easily make the security camera the main picture ( push 1 button on the remote ) -- its a good trick if I go out or go away to leave 1 TV on showing the picture that is also being recorded -- that in itself may discourage someone breaking in ( peak through a window and you see yourself on a TV ) . Anyway , each to their own .

Get yourself the 20L of paint in a colour like Dulux snowy mountain. This will lighten up the home, and get rid of the beige/yellow walls. Add floor rugs to give texture to the rooms, and cover the tiles. The lounge room, design of home is a typical design from the 1970’s to 1980’s. See the attached pictures for possible furniture placement. This room is the same size as your lounge room.

Size of rug - should have edge under couch and allow feet to sit on it when sitting on couch. See my rough diagram for indicative considerations. Id have a small table beside couch that could be moved as needed ( I have a tray table), and a more solid puff that can stay on rug and act as coffee table/ seating etc

I should also note the dimensions of the room. The width between bench chair to wall is 3.2Metres, and the depth between fireplace to where the kitchen bench ends is 3.3Metre or all the way to back of room is 6.1Metres

There is lots of doors which one you want to close? What is on the opposite end of the fireplace?

So feasibly you need maybe a small sofa and two chairs. If possible I would think about maybe only one chair and either a stool to double as a side table or a small ottoman to double as seating/table. Your counter stools are also too big for the space (I know they are comfy!!) you need something much smaller without a back. I don't think you could fit much more in. The first thing I would do is to find a small sofa you like and cut out the dimensions in newspaper. Then lay in on the ground in various places to see if it works!

Your main issue here is going to be circulation space I think. It's difficult to tell the dimensions of the room and how big your lounge(s) are. So I would suggest draw a scaled down 2D overhead map. Shade all of the areas on the map where the doors need to open, where the island bench seats need to pull out to, where the heat from fire will burn you or the furniture and most of all, where people will need space to walk. The remaining unshaded space is where your lounges are allowed to go 　 I assume oriented towards that little TV mounted in the corner.

How about a small scale L shape sofa with the long side facing the fireplace. You could have small table and chair set at the other end of the room. You need some soft textures, A desk may also be useful somewhere.

Depending on the size of the couch, put it in the Centre of the room facing the tv and fireplace. Have the back of the couch starting where the entry to the kitchen is to create a pass through

You could have the small couch as suggested, then 2 occasional chairs which could be stored in other areas of the room. These could be lightweight enough to easily move near the couch when you have visitors.
