Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Recessed or hidden undercabinet lights?

I have handleless wall cabinets and don’t want to have any sort of pelmet or extra panels on them. I want lighting underneath, but don’t want to be able to see it. Is it possible to get lights put into the bottom of the cupboards without messing up the storage inside?

Hello, I know these lights are below my island unit but I think that they could be fitted under wall cabinets. There is a flexible metal strip attached to the doors and the lights feed into them.

Me again, should check before posting!! The metal strip is attached to the base of the units NOT the doors

Hello, Sorry in advance to bring up an old thread/subject, However looking for any additional advice/direction i can get on comment from midesign0401 below... mldesign0401 In Victoria a range hood is a requirement in new kitchens. No longer is it acceptable for a simple exhaust unit, rather it must now be ducted to external air. So your range hood must be flued either through your roof space or via a horizontal duct to an external wall. It must be installed and signed off, and your house insurance will require your sign off document if your house insurance is to cover damage due to fire, or you will find yourself in a predicament. The provision for installing a range hood above a gas cooktop is a minimum placement of 650mm above your cooktop, and 605 for an electric hob. Including induction. Hope this helps. Our new home got handed over to us by builder just before Christmas (21/12/2018), We are still waiting for under mount rangehood to be installed into our kitchen, The house was delivered with no rangehood as the hole they provided was to close to accommodate rangehood selection, After a couple of visits we have been told that cupboards are to be removed and replaced, Which we are still waiting for as the 'cabinetmaker is very busy', My inquiry is to see whether there is a building code reference/link I can forward on to them to hurry the process up, Also concerned that insurance would not cover our new house if there happened to be a fire Thanks in advance, We look forward o nay help, Regards, Ken and Nadia Buxton

LOVE that you noticed the vanity over the bath..a feature used in all my own bathrooms as it provides so much extra counter area, improves the look of the whole vanity and the space on the end of the bath under the extended counter is perfect to line up all our ducks (the same idea also goes well over a toilet)...BTW i noticed that i forgot to include an in-wall mirror doored medicine cabinet with the outside doors hinged in opposition (so you can see the back of your head!)... the medicine cabinet could be as wide as the vanity counter and built in wall 150mm deep with adjustable shelves is suitable for almost all bathroom storage including toilet rolls and with all that extra in wall storage it's worth considering a wall hung vanity that will allow floor space underneath for a waste bin, dirty clothes basket, set of scales, slippers etc and makes the room feel so much more spacious...best of luck with your new bathroom, the next challenge is which tiles and taps and soap dishes and towel rails etc etc??

Hi AndrewJason, I love cavity sliders. they are there when you want them but not visible when you need the space open. Having said that they cost more, take a bit of wreckage to set up and in you WA case you will be wrecking brick walls to put them in which might be a stretch of mess too far. BUT you will need to weigh up if they are worth it in the end. I do not think the build will be too bulky in the kitchen/dining because it will be superbly practical on both sides and it maybe just a matter of what you are used to. Not sure about "Average Joe...…" we are all good at somethings, mine is plans, function, practicality, solar. Yours might be brain surgery, empathy for unwell folks, kinda or you make the best seafood lasagne in the world... we are all needed to make for a great world: and it really is that!!! Good luck with your splendid home: I think it is beautiful. And PS if you do make the best seafood anything I better have your address....!!!!!!! MK

What sort of lights are they? Would they be good enough to use as task lighting? I wonder whether the metal strip would look quite visible underneath wall cupboards.

They were recommended to me by the company that made my kitchen. You can find them on Facebook, the company is called Kitecraft and they have a Facebook page. I wanted a “floating” island impression so the kick board was recessed and the lights were fitted. They are strip LED lights. Give Kitecraft a call and tell them that you’re interested in the lights that Yvonne had fitted under her island, they’ll remember me!!!

The new LED undercabinet lights are only 4mm thick. This is so discrete that you don’t need a pelmet to hide them.

They look perfect. Are these sort of things bright enough to use as task lighting or are they more for ambience?

For lighting under the cabinets, I strongly advice strip led lights, as it gives you the perfect lighting you desire and it looks great! An image of your kitchen will also help in order to give the best advice for you. Would you also consider having an alternative lighting for your kitchen?

LED strip lighting is perfect for under handleless wall units, it is so discreet and can create such a beautiful atmosphere if correctly installed.

I have used LED lighting in numerous installations and in my showroom for under worktops and plinths. I have even used it in feature ceilings for certain installations.

It is such a versatile product.

The use of LED tape is very versatile and relatively easy to incorporate into cabinetry, some top tips:
- Think about where you locate your lighting driver as some tapes need to have this relatively local
- Always place tape on the aluminium profile as this prolongs it's life and performance
- Most will come with a diffuser that will eliminate 'spotting' of the individual LED and give a smooth light spread on the surface/wall
- If you have a few lighting scenes then consider some lighting control like Lightwave

LED strip lighting with a handleless wall unit its fairly easy to retrofit and discreet. You will need a driver and of course a switch or even better go wireless. Used under unit for work task lighting, worktop and plinth lighting its very versatile. Most showrooms have this type of lighting on display in some form or other. If your nearby pop in and see us.
