Tile problem - to cut or extend bench top up?
I have seen quite a few pics of people using the same type of tiles with the cut tile added on to 10cm and I’m not entirely sold on that, given that it interrupts the pattern and adds another grout line. Adding 15cm with the tile would keep the pattern but it really impacts on the height of the overhead cupboards and I’m only 150cm!
One solution is to add a lip/rise/addition of 10cm using our bench top stone at the bottom of the backsplash to make up the 10cm. I’m struggling to find the right search terms in order to find pics of other people who may have used this idea. I’d be grateful if anyone can find pics of this or help me with search terms.
So what do I do? Cut the tile in a not quite perfect place to make up the 10cm or consider using the bench top stone at the base of the splash back ? Any other creative suggestions would be appreciated.

Comments (24)Hi Karina. Haha very funny re your art piece, KitchenAid! Baking is so much fun; I'm a baker from way way back, and you learn by just jumping in and doing it. About the height of your combined dining/bench table, it's pretty important to have a height that's comfortable for you whilst you work. I'm tall and my family is too, so we had the benchtop height built higher so we are not getting backaches from constantly having to bend over to work. It's really more important for the one who does all or most of the cooking & baking to be comfortable as you can spend long periods of time reading and working out recipes, then putting it all together. Comments (24)White-matte cabinets (flat panel, not shaker) and white bench (or maybe epoxy sealed marine ply??...siriuskey can tell you about that), mirror splash. Love the ceilings. I personally would go for a modern, stream-line, no handles, integrated appliances look. This space has real potential to be very cool, even with the slate. Comments (13)Thankyou so much for all the feedback and ideas. I really appreciate you taking the time to look at it. Annb1997 here’s a photo looking around to the other side of the wall. We have a big sliding door which will provide a good view out to the pool. There is currently a tall bookcase on the other side of the wall but I will move that elsewhere (not in the dining room). I may buy a low cabinet to go on the other side of the wall for storage down the track. My main reason for wanting to see the pool is to be able to see my kids in the pool whilst I’m in the kitchen (washing up, cooking etc). Plus I like the idea of being able to see through to the dining room instead of it being a more ‘closed off’ room. To the right of the dining room is a lounge room. The dining room is about 3mx3m. Down the track we’d like to do further renovations (ie. new kitchen, new flooring which would need to be done at the same time) but that may be years away till we have the money. So I was trying to be practical I suppose, and achieve what I want for a smaller price. However, I don’t want it to look stupid . Juliahocking - interesting idea about the 30cm slots.... you’ve got me thinking... I think that might look good, but I think I want a better view outside. Oklouise - I hadn’t thought of a window. 5 years agoYou need to apply a bit of designer thinking to your situation. I would lower the overhead cupboards so that you can reach them easily and to be a perfect fit above your 600mm tiles which are fixed vertically. Use a rangehood that is not incorporated into the overhead cabinetwork to the height required. For the splashback behind the cooktop and under the rangehood use a different material that matches your tiles in thickness, possibly stainless steel, or a large format porcelain tile which has been cut down to size, or even a stone benchtop material such as Dekton which is not affected by the heat from a gas cooktop. A splashback with a smoother finish under the rangehood will be easier to clean than the tiles that you have selected which will be a grease trap.
You need cupboards that you can reach, but you still need to comply with regulatory requirements, and the recommendations of the manufacturers.

5 years agoHi, firstly I love you tile choice, I agree i think just extending the bench up the wall would look good, you could do 1/2 top and bottom to frame it and that would give it a bit more balance, whatever you pick will look beautiful. Lynne

5 years agoMake sure you have a really good tiler, and they will work it out. We also used Souther Cross tiles, but in quite a different pattern. Our tiler did a cut at the top, and we can hardly notice it.
