How do we furnish a small room with hardly any wall space?
Comments (11)Western wall will have a carport attached so will be shielded from sun. Western 'wall' of carport will be mesh with a creeper grown up it. We live in Gladstone SA where we have a long hot summer and a long cold winter. We have built houses before that make use of north facing but have found since we have lived here that having lots of south facing windows is also very important for light without sun coming in and for when a cool breeze is present. Shower room is on the north side so that it dries out well and doesn't grow mold. North wall will have a pergola with a deciduous climber on it. The second bedroom is a spare room - children have gone. The dog room does not have solid walls. It will actually be cellar balustrading - the dogs are in the room without being all over the furniture. Their spot is there because it gives them access to the yard (there will be a dog door in the wall). The house is actually a converted shed. We are using secondhand products as much as possible. Windows in the living area are 1800H but have to be 500 off the floor or we have to reglaze them with safety glass (they are old windows). External doors are both glass. Our taste is country/shabby chic/reclaimed/antique. We already have plenty of furniture, just not sure how to arrange it and wanted some advice...See MoreHow do you feel about a "mindfulness space"?
Comments (7)I really can't stand the word mindfullness. It's like wellbeing - just combining two words to make a new one feels so clunky. How about being conscious, aware, present, in the moment. I voted for #3, as i appreciate fresh air and natural light more than silence or seclusion. I dont have a space like this at the moment, but maybe a stool in my courtyard could do the trick. Thanks for the inspiration!...See MoreHow do you reconfigure to make the space work?
Comments (38)Hi all as an update, we now own the unit (subject to settlement) and have been in with a builder. The discrepancy in the original kitchen measurements is that the floorplan has been incorrectly drawn. Attached is my update, as you can see the kitchen wall is not flush with the adjoining wall, hence the difference in width. Now we do really need ideas!!!! We are thinking about a kitchen like this too with similar flooring....See MoreHow do I renovate this space creatively?
Comments (15)So Kylie, If I understand you correctly your thinking: east side: office, guest master with ensuite, kit, living/din and lovely deck. West side: entry, sitting/bedroom, grandies bedroom, space........ robe in little bedroom, master with skinny bathroom your ensuite. It leaves the center bathroom as pwd room for guests not staying tho it would make a great pantry!! And the space: I think moving the laundry there is the best idea: All I can see is a l'dry in a cupboard in the kitchen for a 5 bedroom home! Another suggestion: east side: office, guest bedroom with ensuite, kit, liv/din/deck. West side: bed, leave as living room, laundry, grandies bedroom with robe down center backing the din/living that is staying. So with a mirror door or two and some width you could walk past your robe on your right as you go to your bedroom &/or ensuite. That way kiddies are near you, the space in center of house is used, living room is still close by the other living area and you will have a wonderful laundry for a FIVE 5 bedroom house with 2 living rooms too. The space is ideal at 2.2 wide: it needs two straight lines of benching. so close off the db sld doors, leave ext door and put a cav sl opposite it into hall by living room. The robe to the right as long as you need and wine store backing laundry (Just so you can grab a bottle on your way to bed!! ha ha) But it would also be near kitchen and dining too... Does that make sense? Hope so or I can draw it for you..... Great idea: zoned north for you 2 to live in most of the time but south for when you have guests...... Cheers Margot...See MoreNerida King
