Love all the wonderful comments above. The only thing I would add is: really consider what you want to use this room for... What do you want the room to do? Welcoming guests? If it is welcoming, then think about what makes you feel welcomed when you walk in - that ahhhh feeling.....maybe plants (a bonsai project would work well in that light), some family photos instead of a mirror, coat hanger behind door, buffet table (where you stand your G&T chrystal set on a nice sliver tray). Or is it a Staging ground for getting out the door? Then perhaps the mirror, some sort of rack for bags & hats etc, a bench for sitting and putting on shoes, cork board for reminders etc (it is possible to have these all behind a thin closet so closed doors hide any clutter). Whatever you choose, I just find it helpful to keep the rooms purpose in mind.

Dr Retro, you are a designer after my own heart! My triple fronted brick veneer house was built in 1965, extended in 1970 and I try and stick to furnishings and influences from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s! I am its third owner, but have discovered its history via my elderly neighbours. I also have lots of antique vases, crystal and fine bone china, as was popular in the 1960s and 70s in my lounge room. Cannisters in the kitchen are all straight from the 1960s purchased by my mother, then handed on to me. Meanwhile my sun room is an explosion of plants , cane, colour and knotted pine feature wall. Whilst I have double glazed and slightly tinted the lounge room windows for privacy, I try and maintain the period integrity and hope to heritage list my property. So many glorious homes of this era are being knocked down for building town houses and macmansions, especially those on huge blocks, like mine. It is an easy house to live in and I am grateful for my separate kitchen, with easy access to the open plan dining room and lounge, as it keeps my dog out of food preparation areas. I love the cosiness of my kitchen in a home of otherwise vast spaces too! The separate living areas and kitchen have at times, made it easy for 3 generations of the family to happily coexist here, which in a totally open plan home would have been difficult!

I have struggled with these same questions. i have asked for advice from tradespeople, tile sellers, researched many bathrooms by designers and have come to the conclusion that it is ultimately what you personally will be happy with, unless you intend to sell your place in next 5 years. I am told that tiles are the most expensive thing to change if you wish to change the look but tap fittings etc is easy. I think as Kate said, you want to keep something in common across all bathrooms . I have seen one bathroom design change the terrazzo colour from one bathroom to another. If you have the space, accessories can also provide links to the bathrooms... eg towels, Knick knacks, lights etc

Love your fish painting, and love your colour choices. And because you love it, you should go for it. Being surrounded by things you love makes you happy, and who doesn’t want that!? As mentioned, a little blue / green in your otherwise neutral furniture and furnishings, to tie things in, and some textural elements, both fabric and with accessories, and you’re all good. If your not familiar with it, look up the 70 20 10 (sometimes called the 60 30 10) design rule. I find it often helps with this type of dilemma
