How do I create an inviting entry room?
Comments (15)Hi Martea, I agree with Dohraime, an open bookcase would help create an entrance way and provide some storage that appears to be much needed from the floor plans. You asked about dimensions, I would personally make sure that the minimum clear space between the staircase and end of the book shelf is a minimum of 1200mm, but at the absolute minimum, 1000mm (1 metre) clear space is needed; thus it should be between 1200mm and 1500mm in length and the height should preferably match the head of your windows so approximately 2100mm. Depending upon the dimensions of your existing 3-seater sofa, I agree that you could back this onto the open bookcase. However, to ensure the best look, the sofa should end when the bookshelf does. As you can see from the diagram I have included, you could fit 2 arm-chairs and a coffee table in, however care will need to be taken to enure you have enough space to walk comfortably around the pieces of furniture. Try to search for a narrow coffee table. Given that you have replaced the curtains with shutters, you could place the television and console in front. This is not ideal in regards to lighting, but the space is constrained. I would also include a large rug (as depicted) for the living space so as to clearly define it. It could be approximately 3 x 1.8 m. This rug could be something bright and colourful given the muted colour scheme you have so far used. A bold pattern would also work. In regards to the dining area, it is possible to also fit a buffet in the space, and would again provide more storage. Something I noticed, and I am not sure it is within your budget, but the dividing wall around the staircase at the entrance is very dark and interrupts the clean lines you are going for. I would suggest if possible to remove it and replace with a glass balustrade. This would open up the space more and help to bring more light into this space. I hope this has been of help. I couldn’t find it in my profile though but here is the link. https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/5879722/ceilings-floors-and-weatherboard-questions it was kind of an unrelated question re matching ceilings Which is now redundant as it was a question pertaining to the old floor plan. If we keep our current floor plan, we don’t need to match the ceilings as we no longer have the combined dining living - theyre now separated by the kitchen. The deck on the floor plan is now to be knocked down and turned into a dining room. Haven’t got a floor plan for that since we just got the news from council. Trying to warm my husband to it. Otherwise he wants to move! I’m wanting the wall to be weatherboard under the windows to match our weatherboard living room. We have a nice view from the deck hence to keep that going in the new dining room w these windows. this is advice from council. The deck would eventually need to be replaced in the next ten years as it’s an old house so I’m not bothered we would pull it down as we would have to anyway but to be replaced w a new deck. Comments (26)I have an Edwardian villa I restored 7 years ago and my master bedroom is on the street front as well and not that light. I have 2 bay windows in the house. I struggled with privacy too (I can can sit in m bed on Sunday morning with a coffee and see people walking their dogs!) and when I go to get changed I don't want to pull curtains and change in the dark. Also my lounge bay has gorgeous stained glass work that I didn't want to cover, Btu I have a beautiful front garden that I want to be able to see. I looked at several solutions including shutters and had quotes etc, For the bedroom I decided on roller blinds, sheers and also a beautiful silk curtain. Sheers for privacy and to control the sun, roller blinds for darkness add a bump lined curtain for added insulation and sound proofing, The Lounge: I used sheers and a full length curtain with bump lining. I also have placed my curtain tracks quite high up to complement the high ceilings. I decided on this as sheers give you privacy, control the sun; curtains give you insulation and also soften a room; both options can be pulled back off the window so that you can appreciate and see the window; they also complement the style of these older homes, If I was to do this again there are amazing thermocell blinds that can be attached at the bottom meaning that you have the option of pulling then from the bottom up. If you pulled them halfway up, his gives you privacy but still lets the light in.The have amazing insulation properties and they give you a cleaner look if that is what you are after. If I was dressing the windows again I would definitely look at this option as an alternative, I really encourage you to not install shutters or wooden venetians. I think they can darken a room and be heavy looking. I know lots of people install them in villas but I personally don't think they are the best or only option. PS just re-looked at your photo: I would recommend a sheer and curtain on a double track, Place the track higher; make sure the track is wider enough that the curtain can stack off the window; consider a wide heading tape (eg 160 mm is what I used to suit the proportions of the room and curtains). ....See MoreTo plantation shutter or to not plantation shutter...
Comments (8)Plantation shutters are visually busy and reduce your water view by 50% even when fully open. It looks like you have the old style aluminium frame windows and single glazing. I don't know if losing heat in the winter, or getting too hot in the summer is a problem in your part of the world, but aluminium framed windows are excellent at transferring the external temperature inside as they conduct heat. If this is a problem then you can't beat traditional lined, full length curtains and a pelmet. Ensure the track is much wider than the window so that you can pull the curtains fully back, clear of the window, to enjoy the views. Traditional curtains give you the most flexibility for light control, heat control and privacy when required. I would look for a plain block of colour (not patterned fabric), with very simple understated pelmets for an elegant and flexible solution that will work for all of your seasons. 4 years agoHi Caitlin, my curtains are on brackets attached to wall, just below cornice. The curtain rail has the attachment for curtain hooks at the bottom of rail, not the side. My ceilings are 2700, windows 2400.

4 years agoThese photos were on houzz. Shutters and curtains. And curtains with the same curtain and track as mine.
If the shutters have the frame inside the window, then shutters inside that frame, there is minimal to no light coming in when closed completely. As said by previously by,Decoro, it's the quality of the shutter manufacturer. Roman blinds will look good also, but the light will come through on the edges of window frame, as there will always be a slight gap.
