I have never been one to follow trends. I don't care whether my kitchen is suitable to appear in the next glossy magazine, as long as it is functional for what I want. I look at "trends" just in case there is something new out there that looks functional for my needs, but I certainly wouldn't care if something I like is no longer "on trend" What is funny, I think, is that (having come from Europe) my grandmother's kitchen, complete with butler's pantry (not called that, of course) was very much like the kitchen I want today (with more power points, of course) I really think it is amazing how we are back to the future. When I came to Australia, no one heard of parquetry (or even timber - HAD to be covered with wall to wall carpet) I remember my Aunty was having a house built in the 60s and had huge arguments with the builder... She wanted ceramic tiles in her kitchen and laundry and the builder told her she was mad. She also wanted parquetry. She won the argument (had a lot of trouble finding a person the lay the parquetry) but the builder told her that she will be calling him back in 6 months to rip it all up. We also had an indoor clothes line, that you could pull up and down to the ceiling with a pulley. I just read about someone "inventing" this here. :-) Just remembered another thing we have recently invented here. Double glazing :-)

Personally I love angles & splays, BUT they have to have purpose and be functional. Without seeing more surrounding context hard to comment but i can't help wondering why this all being so squeezed in one area, but then almost wasted/under-utilised space in-between the island and the table - it's like the pantry's boxing/internalising the kitchen which is not ideal.....either way I'd make sure that it flows and is functional and not awkward anywhere

So where would your cooktop be? Where would you cut up vegetables and need to wash them? Where would people get a drink of water from? If you want to keep the kitchen bench top clear then that means you are going to be standing in the butlers pantry a lot accessing water for various cooking and personal needs of washing hands and drinking. Have you thought of putting a small sink at the end of your “clear island”, this will be somewhere to fill up and empty pots of water, if your cooktop is in the kitchen, somewhere to get a drink, somewhere to wash hands and vegetables.

Hi Gabi, Interesting little place with heaps of potential of being the forever fun house for your family! First question: where are you and is the home slab, brick veneer, aluminum windows or something different? If it is stumps then there are more options with moving plumbing etc which could be a definite advantage. I see the back is north? This will mean with the alfresco across the rear you will have NO sun into the house. If your in FNQ that is fine but if your south of about Sydney it is really great to have winter sun into the home for FREE heating in line with best practice passive solar design. So with that in mind to the plan: With the one long room thru the middle of the house and doors off each corner of the room, first thing to do is scribble a meter wide for where you will walk and see what is left for furniture. IE the front door does leave a good U shape in lounge for furniture. Then bedrooms to the left with a lost corner. The dining table one walks around: ok. But then the kit and sitting area we need to get past and to be able to get back to the left and into master. IMHO the laundry, pantry (need to be separate rooms) and need to be as narrow as possible to make the middle room workable. But I believe there is a better solution. My forte' is playing with plans till we get them right for you and this is no exception!
