Well , with nothing approaching colour yet , I'd look at the neighbours , and decide what you like too . Charcoal trim would be predicatable and boring , so what 90% of people go for haha . Something like red or burgundy would play to the barn heritage , and add some ( much needed IMO ) colour , a mid nutmeg brown would look similar to charcoal but just interesting enough that people may actually notice it , or a dark Forest Green or even a more Irish Green may even suit and be noticed .

Any shade of blue would just start looking corporate IMO , while any 'part' shade like apricot or teal would just look weird .

Thanks Pottsy. Yes the three sides are cream brick and front white. We have toyed with the charcoal and also a colour called jasper (which is close to nutmeg). We are looking for a classic look so we’re thinking a light grey to keep it in the same vein- but it’s safe. Something on the green spectrum could be very interesting indeed.

I move the finishes you’ve chosen. It will look amazing. I’m a big fan of the gutters matching the roof. When you say trim what exactly are you referring to?

When I say trim bigreader I mean down pipes, guttering, eaves and facia. Only variation will be wood windows on white, and white windows on a small amount of brick. We were fully intending to let the unique shape of the building be the hero. Question is, will it be too much of a white mass?

The white provides a beautiful canvas for landscaping, especially if you go for a particular theme, eg dramatic, sculptural, Japanese or what ever takes your fantasy. Think about the plants, and select trim colours that either compliment or add to the canvas. I would talk to your designer and see what is in mind. What is goal of the shape, Dutch colonial? It looks like a South African Dutch Colonial in its base shape. You are seeking landscaping that heroes the shape eg in Japanese design the white exterior has trims in black or wood and landscaping the soften and draws the eyes to the line of the building.

Thanks very much guys. We really like the shape doing the talking and in the absence of a designer (long story) we feel that wrapping the building in surfmist will help this. Good to know down pipes etc aren’t to be seen as well. It is of Dutch colonial inspiration. Our landscaping will be simple layered native shrubbery with a creeping fig on the brick and a gleditsia sunburst (honey locust) as our deciduous feature tree that allows winter light. Here’s a couple of more renders.

Agree that downpipes, gutters etc aren’t features and would look great in surfmist.
As your landscaping evolves you can always add some native flowering plants.
