Thank you to all for the wonderful feedback. I didn't intend to paint the walls blue rather a taupe/brown - the De Sousa home is a great example. Since publishing the photo and the question - I have viewed many fabrics in many shades of blue and came to the conclusion blue is probably not the right choice. The photo looks beautiful but have moved to silver/grey with plum purple walls. But keeping the padded bedhead with demi lune side tables, an occasional chair in far corner and I already have the perfect bedside crystal tired lamp bases already. Again, could go very wrong with purple but I think I've found the perfect colour here in Australia. There are some stunning fabrics available in the silver/grey tone and I think it would well in the bedroom. The starting point funnily enough in moving to silver/grey was stumbling across the most gorgeous drape fabric. Then I built the rest from there. Now it's down to making final selections. A frustrating but fun process. Can't wait to see end result. Fingers crossed it all works out! Thank you once again - this site is amazing and your feedback is most helpful.

I agree with Brandi Nashi Hicks on timber and colours - think about providing colour with things that are simple to change like cushions, artwork, rugs and other accessories while keeping the basics of your home neutral - this way you can quickly, cheaply and easily change the look of your home as new trends or your tastes change. Don't worry too much about storage for when children come - the way you actually live in an apartment can vary drastically from how you think you'll live in it so put in what you need now, and then adapt your apartment to your family. Babies and small children don't need a lot of stuff - especially if you share cots, prams, clothing with friends and family so that you've got only what you need at that particular time - this works until they're at least school aged and provides a win/win solution to you and friends on storage and cost of little ones. Your future home looks as though it'll be a beautiful happy place to be a family and I hope you'll be very happy in it.

if the fibro is in good condition, simple paint and enjoy your gorgeous vintage home if there's any damage you can replace the old fibro with a modern cement sheet using simple timber battens (looks like the old curved fibro cover strips) and making sure to add suitable insulation...the advantage of using similar thickness cladding is there's no expensive alterations needed around windows and doors although, if you decide to remove the old fibro it's quite expensive to have the professionals do a big job but check the latest regulation and you may be able to replace small sections at a time
