Drab country-style dining room - HELP!
Comments (17)What a great room - the potential here is endless! The curtains definitely need to come down first, they completely overwhelm those stunning windows. I'd go for super soft white, sheer, floor length curtains, and the walls would look beautiful in a beige color with white ceiling and trims. Can you afford to replace the blue lino? Even if it's just a different colour lino in a neutral shade like cream or beige it would make a big difference. The tablecloth could be replaced with nice placemats (white or natural fibres) or if you really love tablecloths go for one that is a bit more neutral like white or beige and have a nice centerpiece ie a small plant, vase, candles or similar. Also add a few decorative items to the sideboard on the right - a lamp (with a WARM white bulb of course) is a good start plus provides lovely mood lighting to dine by. Good luck with your makeover and happy decorating!...See MoreThe heart of the home - kitchen transformation by Kitchen Mania

Comments (4)imo the biggest challenge/cost would be removing all those big solid walls, changing doors and windows and repairing ceilings and not the extra plumbing (new bathrooms and kitchen cabinets, fixtures and appliances cost the same regardless of the extra few metres of pipes) and a new location can make the most of the available space but it can sometimes be more cost effective to add an extension rather than attempting to squeeze too much into an existing building but you need an engineer, builder and plumber to give expert advice on site ... better not to assume that one option is better than another but collect a variety of ideas and ask for quotes to compare actual prices but do you have a realistic budget? i would expect to pay at least $50,000 for a modest new kitchen and bathroom in the same locations before removing any walls or adding an extra bathroom and new laundry and the combined ens/wiw is too small and would be better to have a good sized ensuite with biw and there's not enough space for a bigger island without compromising space in the family dining area...there are so many different options but we need more info...are there any good or bad views, what is the length and width of the block, is there a garage, is there car access into the back yard, what is the distance from the house to each boundary, describe your climate, where is north on the plans, how many steps are there from the back and front doors to the ground, does the block slope and in which direction, how much headroom is under the house and in the roof space...is there any potential for an upstairs, downstairs or an extension into the backyard?...See MoreContemporary kitchen & pantry transformation in a 1912 Federation home
Comments (25)Seriously? Lack of understanding of the authentic original period architecture. This is neither fish nor fowl and so overcooked. Less is more people. The best results in renovations/refit scenarios are always those that are inherently sympathetic, taking cues from the existing space or original style, and tying in. It can be successful taken either in a contemporary direction or restoring accurately, BUT regardless of what it is it needs to be BALANCED, rather than the mess like here which is a case of arbitrarily applying an excess of random foreign design and style elements. People (including interior pros) need to stop trying to be "on trend" for the sake of it or thinking we must have "features' or 'hero' elements. Sometimes the best and most clever architectural results are those that promote LESS attention to it......but enduring and classic outcomes requires subtlety and capacity to confidently filter stylistic choices without being influenced by the noise of the latest interiors magazine or Pinterest post....See MoreI For Style
