Exterior colour scheme

last year

We recently bought a new house and need an exterior colour scheme. Could you please suggest a combination of three or four colours that will work well together for this house? Current colour is antique green (roof, fence), cream (stone front, roller doors), and wood (windows). It feels so dated.

I will repeat this colour scheme everywhere outside the house, from fence to eves etc…

I am NOT a designer at all. My taste is questionable at best :)

I quite like it. Definitely keep the windows as wood. They are a quality fitting. Think carefully about painting the roof. Colorbond recommend that you don’t paint it and you will need to repaint as a maintenance issue. I’d start by removing the fence, the window awning and the hedge. I’d do all new landscaping starting with a new fence and hedging plants behind the fence.

Agree. Put your money in the landscaping first. Then if roof still an issue paint it a more earthy tone, basalt might work. Prob look like the photo you posted. I’d consider a timber picket fence same colour as windows. This keeps the earthy tones but you can use a modern picket style.
I will note the house I loved the most at bundalong was a stone clad house. With bullnose verandas. They recently renovated and removed both replacing it with weatherboards and modern verandahs . Still my fav house. Get a landscape designer in to advice on facade and garden

Yes go monument!and if you go for some lime acacias out the front (tall weeping or the low bush)it would brighten up you whole look.Also adding strappy green plants that bulk up would give it a bit more of a clean look. If you don't want to go monument on roof go a light grey and tie in with a couple of tall light grey planters on either side of your door. Pleas please please!find someone with a jigsaw and cut the tops off your pickets to give a cleaner look before you paint them. I'm stating the obvious but those security screens are pretty overwhelming,can you just have them on windows that can be opened,it might not look so busy out the front.

Hi Laura, I love the idea of checking your current paint samples ... sounds like something I would do too ;) I think Dulux have a visualiser app/website where you can upload a picture - I think you can select colours from your current photo and it will give you an idea of the best colour match (which might help you determine the paint colours in your current photos) and also do your own make over by selecting colours you like and applying them to your layout - I'm not sure how accurate it is but could be worth a little play to give you a start in which direction to head in?

Firstly , you want something that you like , that suits the area and the climate and the vibe , so some of our suggestions are just guesses , modulated by our preferences , so take this more as a discussion , not a set-in-stone outline . Normally my ears prick up when I hear someone say they don't mind something a bit out-there , but I don't think this place wants to be or needs to be -- I'd embrace the era , and go with a 50's soft blue or apricot or mint green . The base boards then could be a more mainstream blue or orange or forest green -- not super bright shades of those , but about 3 times the brightness of the main tone , not 6 or 8 times , if that makes sense . They'd all look good with the white trim , and I personally would have gone for a stronger roof colour , but its pretty neutral so its easy to work with , and won't offend anyone haha . And the fence -- almost certainly a charcoal black stained wooden fence . Within 6 months , as your house starts looking attached to the site , so will the fence fade and weather and not look 'newly done' .

Siriuskey... Wow! All that red! Sorry, but I hate it. It's just too strong for me. Okay on somebody else's house, but I would very quickly tire of it. I like colours from nature. They are timeless. In answer to your questions, the wall on the right is the end of the terrace and definitely needed. Need not be a feature, of course, but I think it's nice to have something visually appealing edging the front terrace. The one on the left screens the front porch and creates separation from the lawn in front of the living areas. Both walls are under the roof, though the one on the right extends out just a little past the edge of the roof. I am looking at the frame now and I like it. I did have reservations, but it looks good. As for the ''stepped out'' wall - it's a little bay in the living room. Not really serving any purpose other than to add a little architectural interest, but I like it. No fireplace! The designer intended for a big TV to go in there but as we have a media room, I didn't want a television in that room, and I did want some windows to invite the north sun in the winter. It will either house the grandchildren's rocking horse or a little conversation setting of two small chairs and coffee table. I think it will look good from the outside with the feature paneling on it. From inside, it's definitely more interesting than just a straight wall. I'll post photos when it's nearer completion. It will make more sense when you can see a proper picture.

Thank you so much for your kind input. The large hedge is super established. You would remove it? That would take years to regrow. Is there a reason to remove the hedge? And the reason for removing the window awning? Sorry if the questions are silly, I genuinely do not know. The house is extremely old. The photo is taken when it was getting dark, I can attest the roof is a faded pea green and really needs some work. I will do basalt as suggested.

I love the hedge, I wouldn’t remove it I think it suits the house. Updating your front fence would definitely add to the overall look, a hedge of viburnum behind fence, a weeping cherry in centre of lawn either side of path.

The home is a beautiful classic SA 1925 home. It is not dated. It just needs tweaking. A decent more solid fence would look better. Balsalt roof as suggested would look good. Landscaping looks good, make sure you maintain it.

A photo taken from the front with front door central to photo would give more insight into the beautiful established garden

Don't remove the hedge, I would add another inside the front fence to match, but before that remove the dodgy wire and replace with simple metal swimming pool fencing between the posts. Change the gravel from grey to a cream colour and work on the driveway, Another beautiful Adelaide stone house. What is the condition of the roof has it been replaced since 1925.

Julie Herbert, I have never even heard of the fence you posted. I looked it up and it sure is a good option. I did not like picket as it feels so flimsy. I liked the pillar and tubular look as it is so grandeur but might be a bit too bulky and take away from the house. So I was thinking having the pillars very sparse like the one below. You like it?

Siriuskey if we grew another hedge behind the fence without removing the other one would it not be too “hedgy”? Unfortunately it’s not gravel, it’s bark chip ground cover and we really comes in three choice of colours; dark chocolate like the one shown here, red, natural pine yellow. I plan to just grow some oranges and lemons. It’s an Italian suburb so every house seems to have immaculately pruned fruit and olive trees.
