How to style a 2.5 metre wide living room

I have an old Victorian cottage that we will be totally changing in about 2-3 years, but for NOW I am struggling to style the living room which is very tiny. It is basically a railroad room you have to walk through to get anywhere, it is only 2.5 metres wide, and it has very little wall space because there are windows, doors, and a fireplace taking up space.

See the pictures of the current styling as well as the floorplan.

I have wondered if it is better to just get rid of a sofa and go for chairs? Or get a tiny sofa on another wall?

Let me know if you have any advice!

Where your couch is currently just an updated leather look with a small table that slides under the couch, sure u can get them at TK Maxx or Kmart

Above Fireplace build shelves for lil knick knacks, really easy and cheap diy until you reno and reconfigure your house

Taller thinner table with a open shelf underneath, under the tv with shelf of plants above, also cheap and easy diy if you use pallet wood. Under the table is ottomans for extra seating if needed or use as a coffee table. Also a towel rack for a blanket underneathe.

Besides the gallery wall behind couch, Suggest using floor to ceiling curtains to cover the two doors just to have a break and section the room so it doesnt look like a walk through, they are curtains too you can always pull them to the side if you need repeated access to the hallway.

Bit of a more clear view of what you would see sitting down, the horse art is actually the samsung tv with preset art. Why I picked that wall colour? Because I like the colour and big or small, paint walls based on what you like, its just paint and it makes the wood and white pop and isnt as jarring on the eye if you had a full white wall with mixed colour art on the gallery wall.i.e if your eye sees colour everywhere

Just my 2 cents of whats possible, before buying furniture, check your sizes, if that is your main lounging area having chairs instead of a couch sounds uncomfortable.

Everything is cheap diy projects that can be temporary fixes until you renovate your home. Use artwork and paint to make it look more exciting than it is.

Wouldn't replacing the sofa with chairs result in less seating? It's not just the seat but all those armrests, and you wouldn't line the chairs up like a sofa because if you did that you might as well have a sofa.

What are you trying to achieve? More seating? More flexible seating, so you can shift it around for tv watching or conversation? Is the fireplace functional or can you do something else with it?

Assuming the sofa wall is 2700mm not 270mm, you already have a tiny sofa. I think the layout you have at the moment is the best use of space and allows access to all areas. It just needs some style to make it welcoming.

Place white porcelain tiles inside.....and a metre outside of the new room I would lay cream rectangle pavers and it will look amazing Get rid of all the trees and just grass and place small hedges around the fence and on one side of the new room I will put a decking the same colour as the bi fold timber trimming in oak will be awesome

rome_agile, have you decided whether to put small round table & chairs under stairs, or bar stools at bench? I'm thinking you might be more comfortable for extended dinners sitting at a table and chairs, plus you can always tuck up an extra stool or two if you are entertaining. There isn't much room at bench and people wouldn't really be facing each other. Stools are fine for quick and casual, if you have space. Maybe backless ones that tuck under the overhang a bit. Have you seen a Tulip table and the clear Louis Ghost Chairs? The Ghost chairs would allow light through so you don't lose the view outdoors and that space wouldnt fee crowded.

We too live in a cold winter climate with our bathrooms all on the southern side and faced similar issues as you do. One smaller bathroom does not have a window so we put in a Velux skylight which provides amazing natural light through the day. This may not be to your liking, especially if you have a period home. We also use heated towel rails and under tile heating (just enough to take the chill off and stop mould) in winter. Although we have a light in the shower recess, a bonus is the large fixed shower head with inbuilt LED, which at night gives the feeling of showering under moonlight. We chose light colours and mirrored recessed cabinets to reflect as much natural light as possible.

To be blunt -- the room isn't really big enough ! So you have to sort out priorities , and space . You have a dining table , and a computer desk . Can you get rid of the computer desk , by having your computer tower mounted behind the couch or similar , and a wireless keyboard and mouse that you can use on the dining table ? Mount the monitor on a wall , or if you don't need in depth graphics , I understand you can use your TV ( I've heard something about the 'refresh rate' is less on a TV ? ) . Maybe even have a monitor but also the option of using your TV ? Could you use a 'breakfast bar' , probably where the computer desk is now , I know its not sociable all staring at a wall , but it would/could serve as a brakfast bar and computer workstation . Could you get rid of the dining table and chairs , and have a large coffee table , or 2 smaller ones , and eat 'casually' ( my polite way of saying eat sitting on the couch ) ? Even mounting the TV on the wall will let you get rid of the cabinet , but I gather you have gaming consoles in there ? And the present arrangement with the pot plants uses some space -- maybe some shelves with them on will still retain the plants but free up floor space ? Just some thoughts off the top of my head .

I'd get rid of the table under the tv as it's not very useful and try and concoct some sort of shelving arrangement. Standard lamp one side of sofa and small movable side table(s)

Add a floating tv shelf under your tv, this will give you more space, match it with a side table for your sofa, by replacing painting above fireplace with a mirror and styling your fireplace shelf you will have a beautiful room, plus an easier walk through that looks really beautiful.
