Paint Design Dilemma Living Room

What colors would you paint this open beam design

last year

We are remodeling and placing lighter color carpet, but we cant decided on how to paint ceiling or beams. Do you we go one color, two colors? Shuld the beams stand out? What are your thoughts?

It really depends on your style, you could leave them, lighten them or paint them white, such a lovely dilemma you have, they are beautiful. Imagine your furnishings in the room and go from there. What ever you choose they will definitely look wonderful.

It depends on what your personal style is.

If your floor is going to be a lighter colour dark beams can be visually too heavy. Are they painted or stained? Do you know what timber it is? Maybe it could be limed or something?

I think the first three pictures Julie posted are beautiful.

But you might prefer to make the beams less of a feature.

My first thought was paint them a bold colour coordinating with the other colours in the room, but that idea is probably a bit too much.

Treasure it for the gem of a 1940s/50s home it is, complete with glorious wrought iron work. Suggestions have been made as to how to boost the height to meet current building codes. You will regret updating the exterior for what is likely to be a one that will date quickly and be higher maintenance . It is only a matter of time until such homes are as treasured as Victorian terraces or Californian bungalows. It is an icon of its time. Accept it for what t is. Why make your house look like a fashion victim of 2019, when it stands in almost the full glory of its original period? It will also save you a fortune too! But yes, minimise the concrete! and add a garden that refects the period the house was built. Roses if you like them, with maybe a magnolia or crepe myrtle feature tree but for lower maintenance try some architectural and ground covering succulents. You could also go with edibles like feature citrus and olives for a Mediterranean feel.

Hi, I know this is a long time after your first notes but I can't help but comment. I love the idea of the shallow wall that goes to the ceiling with a ladder. We lived in a home where the refrigerator was outside on the porch due to lack of space. With very few cupboards, I did a couple shelving units built between studs like that. I measured the height of each shelf away from the one above it with my canned foods. Turned out great and it is amazing how much those 2 little shelves could hold. I also want to say that I don't know building codes in your country but I agree that you should get at least 3 other quotes. With a concrete wall you can put electrical in that area. You can just have them use metal, electrical conduit. It does show (toe kick works, too!) but it is very non-invasive and should be cheaper. I really love the kitchen that Edith Martins posted. It is such a little gem. I can just picture myself working in that lovely place. Go slowly with your renovations. Listen to all thoughts and suggestions. In the end, this is your money you are spending and your home, so be sure to do what makes you happy. Lastly, there is NO box that you have to work within. Look online, watch Tiny House shows, go to architectural websites for ideas. Do YOUR thing. And, please post pictures when you are done! Best.

I'll be the weird one ( well , maybe along with differentways ) and say that I actually like the contrast of the darker beam with all the lighter ceiling and cabinets -- in my opinion , if you matched it to everything else , it would just look more of the same . Differentways said about Jap Black -- I'd possibly go a more 'solid' charcoal or similar , but yeah -- almost make a feature of it . By the way , I am from New Zealand , and we have houses called Lockwoods ( thats a brand name ) . Google them -- they've been around 50 or 60 years , it is really innovative where they make the entire house out of timber with an aluminium siding ( cover on one side ) that locks together and makes a super strong house , with minimal framing , and lots of wood on display . Oh , and they withstand hurricanes and the like . This place has some similar design elements , different construction , but google and see the Lockwood homes !

I think in this case paint them white. I’m not sure why everyone always paints the ceiling a different white. Our designer said to paint the ceiling the same white as the walls and I absolutely love it, and have done the same in subsequent renovation. We used Lexicon half strength throughout and I love the ‘art gallery‘ vibe it gives. Also, why not go real wood on the floor? Yes it might be a bit more expensive but so worth it feeling the beauty of a natural material beneath your feet everyday and much better for resale value on the house. We recently installed european white oak throughout and I love it every day, and it’s so durable and easy to keep clean.

Whilst I don't totally love the beams and roof tones , they are pleasant enough and I wouldn't be too worried trying to change them -- it would take a lot of effort that may or may not be worth it . Or maybe I'm just lazy haha .

BUT what I'd do is paint the walls -- maybe a bit creamier , maybe a blue or apricot tinge -- not a pastel , just a slight hint . OR embrace colours , go a pastel or a burgundy or sunshine yellow or forest green if you want , or maybe a strong feature wall colour and toned down versions on the others , with furniture and accessories to complement .

Apart from the all white one of Julies pic's , the others all have a clear differentiation ( mostly through the use of the beams ) -- yours seems more 'barn-like' in the one tone -- yes , I know theres no furniture . But tio me , doing 'something' with the walls will work better than changing the ceiling tones -- especially with a light toned carpet , it will be too much 'nothing' in my view . Maybe you have bright furniture or art or cushions or rugs , but even then , upping the walls a notch or two won't hurt .

I would do two colours and white ceiling with taupe painted beams . Add a couple of fans hanging from the crossbeams or interesting dimmable pendants .
