Staircase alignment
Hi all,
Asking your opinion on our staircase. Our architect made a mistake with the dimensions of the staircase and we realised it too late after the stairs spine was installed. The top 2 stairs is 935mm in length and all other stairs are 1100mm. We are looking to add black pegs on the stairs to run glass balustrade for support. The spine already looks off centre due to the length of stairs. Any suggestions on what can be done so the stairs look ok if not great?
At this stage, any suggestions / opinions is greatly appreciated as I am very disappointed with how the staircase turned out. My husband is ok with it but I know I will not be happy when I see it everyday so want to try fix this if we can.

9 months agoOnce your glass railing goes in I don’t think you will notice at all, it will look beautiful.

Floor Plan Dilemma: S.O.S. to OKL & SK!
Comments (13)Hello oklouise I am sorry not to be able to respond more promptly I have been uber busy. Wow I love the plan for the bathroom - thank you!!! But I am really going to have to wait on my master suite and change a few things as I have spoken to a Renovator Friend who has made me aware my budget is a problem.. to the point I am giving the existing house AS IS to my in-law and just focusing on the extension for my family. :-/ for now? Always wanted a Master Suite!!!! The bedroom will have to be my office for now and I will out a door in what would be my future bathroom. (Insert crying emoji) Reno Friend has suggested get rid of wall separating mud room/ stairs area. She suggests flip entrance to stairs to closer to door (thereby giving opportunity for full windows over west entrance door allowing western sun. Full height wall where stairs end and slider door there to the middle living/dining wall she suggests we keep. Effectively divides the space into 1/3-2/3. I will need a kitchen in my laundry now as I can't access toilet in extension. Upstairs study will now be my bedroom - so area over void will become my wardrobe. Reno Friend vetoed the fireplace under stairs and said it has to be on western external wall. All these ideas she has a budget reason for implementing .. so. My Feng Shui lady will be despairing. Comments (29)Daniel, can imagine you don't deal with a lot of fire places in QLD but South of that we do. It's like any beautiful old building we need to respect and conserve what is already there, a new addition can allow for more sleek and modern design. I had been very fortunate to own a beautiful federation house which was simply white inside with polished floor boards, fire places mostly timber, when we sold the new owners striped all beautiful arch ways and all exterior Fret work. I have recently seen an Architect show his work on this forum where the Bull Nose verandah's and metal posts were removed "they weren't original", even though they would have been a 100 yrs, and were replaced with more modern square posts. Look at what is happening on the North Shore Pacific Highway, the past government (Labor) has approved multi story apartment blocks along this highway destroying beautiful heritage houses and gardens to do this and losing any historic charm a big lose for Sydney and Australia , and while not doing anything to update ANY transport to support .this Conserve what we have as is done in other countries for future generations cheers...See MoreLighting query pendant

9 months agoAre you having a glass balustrade on the landing left of the stairs,? I can see that because of the step in 935mm on the top two steps you could need the hand rail on the R/H wall of the stairs which could look great in black or timber or both,
The glass balustrade would start on the third step so the following example could add Architectural detail by using the extra width 1100 as a feature this would still give a visual appearance of the full width. and help balance the stair spine
165mm is the difference between the stair widths, glass 10-15mm.
Perhaps even consider painting the door under the stairs black could also help with balancing. (This example doesn't show a spine))
