Revamp a brick wall

We have internal brick walls in our lounge room that id like to revamp.

they are multi coloured with deep recessed mortar lines. ive attached pics.

I dont like the cream colour in the brick.

im looking at brick staining. the only company i can find is dyebrick in the uk to buy the stain from.

I’m also looking at tuckpointing/ repointing for a flush mortar look. pic attached

I have already attempted to tuckpoint using a mortar mix and it was a total fail. The mortar did not stick and I’ve just spent 2 days getting it all off the wall.

the original mortar is still in great condition.

do i need to remove the old mortar to get the new mortar to stick? would you use bondcrete or any other suggestions.

would you tuckpoint first and then stain or vice versa.

I dont want to paint or clad the wall. i’m open to limewash or german schmear if i can tint the mortar. i just dont like the white wash look.

thank you
