Thanks kirstensomers, first up I'll take it that North is to the right of your first picture. A few other thoughts pop to mind: You're being very kind to neighbours if you put a bed along the pool fence as I figure you can't actually see it much from your house. I would suggest letting the pool fence run to lawn. You'll get enough sun to do it as it's facing east. You have to mow that verge anyway, and it would be great for guest parking! You could focus your efforts and $ instead on doing both sides of your lovely wide driveway. I would never usually say this but I almost feel as though the tree closest to the driveway should go. It doesn't provide useful shade in that position. It partially blocks the view from that balcony. Also, the two trees on that side make the garden seem very unbalanced. A single remaining tree could claim its rightful place as the magnificent feature tree. If you went for the chop on one tree it leaves you with a nice amount of space to plant beds on both sides of the driveway and allows for better views if that's what you prefer.That's option 1. For option 2 you could of course take the opposite view and decide to balance out those two trees by planting one large tree on the other side of the driveway! It all hinges on whether you prefer looking into the tops of your trees or prefer looking at whatever you can see from your house. Personal choice for sure. Either way, the driveway would get morning and midday sun. The sun would reflect off the concrete. I'll bet you score the sea 'breeze' there too. Tough gig. I'm with Timandra Design and Landscaping as this is the perfect environment for natives and those that act like them. As to plantings? Option 2 is easier. What type of trees are they in the picture? Plant one of them then under plant with hardy dietes or agapanthus until the shade grows in. Option 1 opens up other possibilities. Modestly sized trees would seem to be the go. Rows of Callistemon King's Park Red marching up both sides of the drive attracting all the birds? Olive trees for their silvery foliage? Once you have decided the area and height for plantings you can go to some fine nurseries that specialise in natives and their mates. Nice way to spend a couple of hours! Hi Sheila, what a gorgeous outlook! i would consider Planting out a low hedge as your boundary the same as the one adjoining the church walls. If your not sure what it is, a local nursery could help with a broken branch, my reason is to try and connect establishment and your homes new landscape, so that it doesn't feel like new and old. I think blending between might be nice. I would urge you to not keep your boundaries square and obvious, instead, layer in front of this low, dense hedgerow, with perhaps balls of trimmed wistringea, also known as coastral Rosemary, it is soft, greyish green with small little lilac flowers, it's also a native that with tolerate the cool winters and hot summers well. I know it to be a quick grower, and cheap to establish. clipped into clusters of balls, it becomes sculptural, and I would continue that idea by mass planting around your borders with interesting layers of foliage. incorporate local stone, which the church is surely built from, in the form of bench seating, random paving, or stone boulders in your beds, ground covers are carefree, interesting and low maintenance, things like euphorbia, with white subtle flowers look like snow on the ground, clumps of lambs ear around pebble pathways are soft, tactile and silver, they blend between the ground cover up to the low lying shrubbery, and the occasional tree. i would build a post and beam structure out your alfresco with perhaps a Boston ivy planted to cover it, or maybe a wisteria in white, the Boston ivy turns from green to red in autumn and is striking against stone. reclaimed timbers even railways sleepers might provide the rustic touch the church provides. Being a small area, I think a crushed granite pebbleb could be sufficient in your back area, with gardens not defined with borders, they could cascade over the edges, softening any man made lines, use random stone pavers crazy paving where a harder surface is needed underfoot. It will be low maintenance, and can grow a ground over between them, in time, this will become your greenery to an otherwise almost fully paved entertaining area. I think the gorgeous gum in your background could provide your colour palette, greys, blues and lilacs, with white as a standout accent in your chosen flowers, if any. try not to formalise too much, keep things free flowing and create generous beds, so your outdoor area feels a part of the surrounding landscape, and not just put in for barrier. I would use some clever, and cheeky lighting, both in your yard to highlight your topiary balls, your alfresco and that gum tree, so the ghostly trunks are a real showstopper by night, and without fences, spotlight to angle at the adjoining stone church, and highlight it by night to your benefit. I agree you can tell a story with your landscape, but not everyone wants to delve into a deep and meaningful connect ion with their project, sometimes a story already exists that you just want to sit back and appreciate rather than write a new one. Be mindful of the church, it's contribution to your landscape and how you can passively connect to it. i would first get a list together of some plants thT youse locally and are beautiful to you, also look at the churches gardens, and if there's anyway you can link into its architect, or garden in some sort of tribute to it. good luck, can't wait to see more.

the reno programs i've seen show a very unrealistic idea of how quick and easy it's supposed to be... your rooms are so generous that re-arranging the fridge, extra storage and seating at the kitchen bench is easy and i've attached an idea for a walk in pantry for your consideration?? BTW i meant the actual structure of the floor, concrete or timber framed in case you want to try the stove or sink away from the outside walls. I'm glad you like the ensuite and wiw and happy to attempt any variations but, much as i like planning kitchens and bathrooms, i suggest you need to confirm the overall construction, especially the roof, before finalising ideas about the internal fit out eg the yellow gable roof in my last suggestion would probably cost as much extra as the bathroom fittings and neither can be changed easily. The new kitchen cupboards would probably cost as much as the plumbing, electrican and windows but maybe the new kitchen could wait...so its' best to decide where you need to economise before you commit

I've been playing around with a pantry location. Originally, I was going to move the pantry into the laundry with some custom shelving and cut the laundry space in half. Now, Im thinking of cutting into the study area and building a wall there, and converting the new space into a long and narrow walk in pantry. Either that or build half a wall and put built in shelving in the study. Building the extra wall will reduce the need to cover in the door way that is currently in place and instead utilising it. Thoughts? p.s. this isnt too scale.
