Room of the Week: A Bathroom and Wardrobe That Are Pretty in Pink
Subtle pink with black joinery makes a glamorous bathroom and wardrobe for a forward-thinking couple
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The client wanted a glamorous, luxurious space where they could relax and unwind – a contemporary space that reflected their personality and had a big wow factor. They wanted colour (hopefully pink) in the space as they were not afraid of big colour statements.
They had only one bathroom in their home so they wanted the privacy of their own ensuite and a walk-in wardrobe to house her gorgeous clothes. They had an adjacent room that they didn’t use much so we decided to convert it into the bathroom and walk-in wardrobe instead.

Starting point
As her favourite colour was pink, and her husband was happy to incorporate it into the design, that was the first path we went along. I have a love affair with penny-round tiles, so I immediately started searching for luxe penny mosaics. Once I found the beautiful marble mosaics, everything just flowed after that.
The black joinery was added to bring a touch of masculinity and contrast to the space. The gold fixtures were the easiest choice and tied the whole design in perfectly. We also incorporated the pink subway tiles to add depth and keep costs down.

Key design aspects
Colour palette:
Materials palette:
Colour palette:
- Pink
- Black
- Gold
- And a bit of grey and white from the floor tiles and mosaics.
Materials palette:
- Marble
- Timber
- Brass
Key pieces of furniture/fittings:
- Fiora Rosa penny round marble mosaic tiles from Beaumont Tiles.
- Evora sconces from About Space Lighting.
- Brass half-moon cabinet pull handles from Etsy.
- Brass tapware from ABI Interiors.
- The vanities were made in black semi-gloss in two-pack polyurethane.
Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures:
As per advice from the builder, the toilet had to be on the wall to the exterior of the house. Therefore, that was the only layout possible for the ensuite given that we wanted to incorporate a free-standing bath and large shower.

Challenges you worked around
We converted a spare bedroom into the two spaces (the ensuite and walk-in wardrobe) so we had very limited space to begin with. Also, we had the constraint of the window, which the client didn’t want to move, so the bathroom was designed around it.

Why do you think this room works?
Even though it is a compact space it packs a big punch in terms of luxury and beauty. Pink is not a colour that people automatically think of when designing bathrooms, so the fact that the client was bold enough to use it (and let me run with it) was exciting and refreshing. The combination of pink, grey, white, black and gold works beautifully, is actually very soothing and not at all busy.
