Stickybeak of the Week: Three Cool Bathrooms With One Warm Look
Discover how a winning design formula can unite the look of an ensuite, main bathroom and powder room
Keeping a consistent style in multiple bathrooms can help to create a seamless look throughout a house, as well as saving on costs and time spent sourcing various materials, fixtures and fittings. Indeed, once you’ve found the winning formula of tapware, tiles and timber, etc, it can be replicated, with subtle variations, in other bathrooms. That’s certainly what Smarter Bathrooms did for this home in Elwood, Victoria, and the result is a welcoming trio of bathrooms – a large ensuite, smaller main bathroom and tiny powder room – that are light, airy and relaxed.

The ensuite
The rough-sawn American oak bench is the focal point of the large ensuite, and this element is complemented with two timber-framed shaver cabinets above the vanity. For contrast, black tapware punctuates the cool, white palette of this calm room.

The black fixtures and fittings add sophistication, with Astra Walker showerheads and tapware with exposed bottle traps being used in all three bathrooms.

“The large-format tiles with matching grout colour give the walls a smooth, continuous feel,” Cook says of the neutral-coloured and oversized 150 centimetre x 75 centimetre tiles. “The epoxy grout is stain-proof and adds another layer of waterproofing.”
In order to achieve this smart detailing and a clean look with minimal grout lines, Cook needed to find “porcelain tiles in a size that eliminated the need for messy grout lines”, and these were eventually sourced and imported from Italy.

A Clearwater Formoso freestanding bath has been positioned to add a feeling of luxury without dominating the ensuite space. “It was tricky to incorporate,” says Cook, “but we achieved the look we were after by placing the bath in front of the translucent window.”
Black detailing also extends to the window frame for an overall look of simple yet sophisticated design that was easily applied to the trio of bathrooms.

The main bathroom
“We met the brief by easily replicating the ensuite in the main bathroom of the house, with modifications, such as double drawers under the sink for added storage,” says Cook of the main bathroom seen here and above.

According to Smarter Bathrooms’ head designer Vanessa Cook, the brief for this trio of bathrooms was to create “relaxed spaces with texture, warmth and simple luxury”. Her clients also wanted bathrooms that were easy to clean and incorporated various display areas. Most importantly, the style of one had to be easily replicated in the others.
