I have been planing my new butler's pantry for a while and here are some of my favourites. My space is 2.8m x 1.5m (L-shaped). I am having 450mm wide bench with open shelving top and bottom on the long side (maybe one row of open drawers like in first photo), 650mm wide bench at the end with sink and cupboard below. I also have a small alcove on the left which will be used as a broom closet (easy access for spills). In your case I would run the bench and overhead cupboards from the window, along the right hand wall and back around to the door. You could then have a study desk under the window with the natural light. You may also have room to put a fold down ironing board cupboard all alternatively put in a pull out ironing board in the bench that returns near the door. Good luck!

Hi. I still have not resolved the fitting out of my study/guestroom after all this time. I'm expecting a visit soon from a rellie who said he could install shelving etc. if I know what I want. I'm attaching a photo of the little room and would have included a rough plan but my efforts to get it on here have failed. However I have included it here for a rough guide. The room measures 2700 x 2200 mm. As you will see from the photo there are double glass doors leading onto a small balcony. The sofa/chair fits just inside the entry door and can extend along the longer wall to 1880 mm for sleeping. If you have any ideas I'd be most grateful to receive them. Many thanks Sydneymidge

Hi DesignD - if it's too be used as a potential study/office space with seating, I initially thought about putting a low level storage/open bookcase against the white wall with perhaps a TV above it (if using the space as a lounge or for presentations if used as a study/office). The study desk I thought could have a glass top and be placed in front of the grey wall so that the person sitting at the desk, is facing towards the hallway .... therefore glare from the window on the computer screen should be minimal. It would also keep the room feeling open and spacious. Then you could still potentially put a 2-3 seater sofa (think sofa bed for unexpected guests) in front of the window facing towards the tv/storage space? You could place a lovely piece of artwork on the grey wall above and behind the desk with a small lamp table in corner near the window/sofa which could do double duty for cups of tea/coffee :)

The best use of that space depends on what is happening around it. Which orientation does it face? How does it relate to the back garden? Are there views? How close is the neighbour, and is there a privacy issue? Good design is not about filling up space, but making a home work for the environment it is in and your future household needs. I might suggest that you look into the value that a professional designer can bring to a project, especially in the preparation of scaled plans with furniture to see how spaces work and flow (or don't work and don't flow!).
