For those still reading this thread. We just recently completed a bathroom reno in almost identical sized space though turned the other way. A lot of reflection in the photos sorry but there is a lot of glass and mirror. A cavity slider, while an added big expense, made the whole thing possible. To create the space I used the adjoining separate toilet room for the 1200 x 900 shower and shallow tall cabinet on the left and gained a closet in the hall outside with the rest of that corner. I also recessed the towel rail which helped give room to the shower entrance and not stick out in front of the loo. Wall hung vanity and toilet. Porcelain wood planks on floor with underfloor heating and also used in shower base. Excuse the towels, they are not my normal ones ! It was a big decision about joining the rooms and whether to keep the bath / shower but I think it paid off. There is just the two of us and it's a real pleasure to use and no longer feels like "standing room only"

Hi Evee, How about something like this? It would give you a very roomy bathroom, with everything you'd need. You could, alternatively, put the toilet where the towel rail is, and put the towel rail behind the shower door, which would give you space for a storage unit behind the bathroom door; but stepping out of the shower to face the loo might not be very attractive! Also, anyone walking into the bathroom won't immediately see anyone on the loo, as it's behind the door. I know there could be a fair bit of plumbing reorganisation, but I think that, no matter what you do, that will be the case. I think it would be worth the investment for a really functional and beautiful bathroom, though. Oh, and don't forget to put in a couple of double power outlets at the vanity - there always seems to be too few in most people's bathrooms. I hope this helps.And I agree with OKLouise about shopping around for bargains and second hand or re-purposed units. New things seem to cost the earth these days, but you save heaps this way, and you can use your money for plumbing and electrical. Good luck! Would love to see a picture of the finished product.

Hi oklouise The sad part is the existing bathroom is beautifully finished! This whole house was well finished and really well built. It was sad to have to demolish things that were so well done, but the design problems made changes necessary. The bathroom has porcelain wall tiles floor to ceiling on all walls and a white polished porcelain floor (slippery as all hell, and a mongrel to keep the grout lines clean!) is laid over a full 300mm+ of solid concrete, under which are all the drains. Outer walls are 200mm of reinforced solid concrete. Tiles on internal walls are over cypress timber frame with generally two layers of lining glued, screwed and nailed on - and there is way more timber in the frame than necessary. I think the builder (who built it for himself) thought the house would last forever and would never need to be changed in any way. Exact distance from external door to wall is 1.1m on both vanity and shower side. The door combination is 1200 wide and placed dead center. It's worth noting that 300m on the vanity side of the door is full-length frosted glass panel and it's possible to infringe a bit on that area if absolutely necessary, provided there's enough room for the door to swing safely (as it swings toward the vanity. Yes, I agree living into a granny flat next to my son was my husband wish before he passed away. It is good to be close to family. Also I love the suburb which I have been lived in for 22 years. My Daughter and her family is living close by too. Most of my close friends are living around and we always gather for a brunch, or lunch or watch movies. The good thing is most of my friends pick me up and don't let me drive most of the time when we go out. Thank you again
