Two bold colours in a lounge - refinement.

I am wondering if anyone can give me some tips about making the most of colour in my lounge, it's a rental and can't do much to the walls. I like the red and the teal together but am wondering if the bold colours clash too much and take away from the rug. Is there any advice on how to better do the cushion arrangement to best match and make the most of the rug?

here's some colours for you..I love earthy colours hence always leaning towards earthy palettes you need to soften up the look with a few neutral coloured cushions

also choose cushions that differs in texture ie..knits ..animal skin ..fur..velvet ..linen etc here is one below knitted but carries your zig zagging pattern from your rug through etc

Bold choices but it looks like a waiting room with all of the pieces lining the walls. Your drum chandy over the dining table is too small scale. Needs to be 1/2 the width of your table and hang 36" or less above it. The one you have now would look good hanging with the portrait of the girl above the buffet or in a powder room or foyer. Lower all your art. Free standing art with centers at 60" above the floor. Pieces with furniture 4-6" above the piece they're with. Don't hang a mirror in the dining room unless it will reflect something beautiful or interesting like the view from one of your windows. Turn your rug the other direction and put the sofa on it perpendicular to the division between the two windows. It should face the single window. Flank the sofa with the two striped chairs, facing each other over the table you have in the corner. Try the striped bench/hassock in the corner where the table was. Raise the curtain rods to the ceiling. If the curtains are too short to kiss the floor, add a wide bold panel to the bottoms in the bright orange of your pillows. I think you should add a fun element like a bright orange bean bag chair on the floor in front of the window. If that is too much for you, add orange or yellow lumbar pillows to the dining chairs.

Ok, don't like the dark cushion, don't like the TV in the bedroom. You could go for pendant lighting using the same 'material' as the mirror? If you went for larger beside lamps while you have that mirror there, they would be fighting each other. In the programs I watch, they say to have 'a hero in the room'. In this case the mirror is the hero I think. Also the extra throw cushion for the bed could match one on the chair, so it ties in (or don't have one at all on the bed). If you did need a TV what about having one installed on the wall to the right of the chair,(looking at the photo) and make sure it can swivel out, so when you aren't watching TV in bed it can be against the wall, out of the way. Then you can have a lovely (glass) ornament or two, or a bunch of flowers sitting on it along with your photos. I love how you have your bed dressed, spot on! (without the dark cushion) I absolutely adore the blue shades in the duvet cover and I would draw those out into the room. Love that you have opened up your windows in the lounge. Maybe a throw rug and some colourful (same colours as in the duvet cover on your bed) cushions on the lounge suite as nothing is really popping! There doesn't seem to be any colour except for the flowers and the photos. Colourful paintings on the wall would be lovely too. Maybe the potted plants could be in coloured (as in your duvet cover) pots instead of white. I know you weren't asking about the lounge and if you are happy with it, then that is all that matters. I found the following photos that may assist in getting the look you want. You are right the white furniture will make the purple wall pop. It can still work with your grey suite, just not on the same wall as the suite. Your TV wall sounds like the best option, but before you paint the whole wall, try painting a large piece of board that you can prop against the wall for a few days. This will let you see it under different light conditions at various times of the day. [houzz=] [houzz=] [houzz=] [houzz=] Accessories are important, complementary area rug (pic 3) , coordinating cushions and some artwork (pic 2) will tie it all together. Key is not to over do it with too much furniture - keep it simple. I am not a fan of fishtanks in the living room, unless you are really up for maintaining it, as they can quickly become murky and could spoil the fresh look you want to achieve. A high storage unit might be more practical and useful as in pic 4. White timber blinds instead of the curtains, definitely, with side drapes to contrast. I'm afraid you will have to repaint the other wall and when you do find a big piece of artwork to hang there instead. Good luck, you have good instincts for design and don't forget to post some updates.

The main assets of your space are the beautiful flooring, the bay window, and the fireplace. The couches need to be rearranged to incorporate the bay window into the space instead of blocking it. This would make the room feel much more spacious and elegant. To that end I would swap the piano and TV as others have suggested. I would also get rid of all the beige, which makes the room rather drab. Either leave the curtains off altogether, or have sheer ones in a tertiary colour with matching cushions to make the room brighter. The floor needs a rug for softness but I wouldn't make it too large, possibly a sage green persian one, but with a discrete pattern. I would also replace the coffee table and TV unit as well as the ceiling light and corner lamp with lighter funky modern pieces - this would not necessarily clash with the more traditional feel of other elements. The fireplace might have an interesting classic design but it is totally lost in blackness! I would paint it white, same as the walls to make its design stand out and also make the room brighter. The baroque mirror over the fireplace looks totally out of place and only reflects the ceiling. A large full height frameless mirror for the wall over the fireplace would make the room feel much more spacious. I would limit artwork to a few larger pieces with simple or no frames. A large painting on the wall opposite the fireplace would be reflected in the mirror/wall over the fireplace and enjoyed from most angles of the room.

Colours are great! Maybe some different shapes will make the combination more interesting. Also some variation in the texture. Try making the throw a black textured knit or perhaps hounds tooth check, in black and white!

(Always place cushions on the square, not diamond.)

As well as the colourful cushions mentioned, add some kind of painting/wall art that incorporates your chosen colours. It doesn't have to be up on the wall. Lean it against the wall or prop it on a book case or table against the wall. (Add a little Blutac to the bottom edge, so the art work doesn't slip!)

Then add those colours as accessories around the room. Photo frames? Flowers?

That way the cushions will 'belong'.

I would keep the plain teal cushion, and add plain but textured cushions in the colour of your carpet, and the creamy colour of your rug. I would maybe add a splash of the red in the rug somewhere else in the room (in a pic on the wall behind the couch maybe?). All the best!

Hello again

I've just realised you have two -thirds of a split complimentary colour combination.

So, as Uyenvy says, add some creamy orange/tangerine to the mix. That may give you the balance you are after. This colour needs to be the same 'value' as the greeeny blue you are using.

With absolutely no interior design training, my only advice is to use accent colours but that does not mean you only use those colours. I think you need to find artwork and cushions and throws and perhaps a footstool or coffee table with other colours that also include the teal and red that you want as your accent colours. Hope that makes sense.

No I don't think the teal and red clash, as long as the red is the same tonal value as the teal. Start with the tonal value of the rug.

I would go online and find some cushions that are different sizes, ie a couple of lumbar cushions 2 X bigger squares and maybe a round one. All chosen in patterns not bolds since the sofa is charcoal, this will soften the look.

Firstly the sofa needs to be properly placed on the rug, I can see why you like it, yet it wasn't the right choice for an all beige backdrop.
If you can paint the walls all in white, this would bring out the rug and sofa and give you the teal and red to work with the white and charcoal.

I would choose red pattern on white, and teal pattern on charcoal for fabric choices. Or go to a fabric store and make yr cushion covers.

You need some prints, art or photos on the wall behind to tie it all in. 3m do Velcro tabs that peel off without damaging the walls. Just allow your walls to cure for a couple of weeks first if you decide to paint. The beauty of the Velcro tabs is they don't allow the frame to move, I always use tabs on every edge of the frame, your max weight is about 5kilos . Found at Bunnings.

Your coffee table needs to tie in with the charcoal and the rug. perhaps a textured wood in a white or grey wash finish with some driftwood sculptural piece, or some other natural materials on top to dress the table.

The 2 colors are great together. I would keep the teal cushion and throw. Add another few patterned cushions with the teal and red in it with some yellow or grey or off white in it also. You could also add a red cushion. Add some cushions that have some texture in them. If you put a coffee table or ottoman on the rug that will tone it down a little. Add some accessories in similar colors on the table or on a tray on the ottoman. Play around with different tones off red, teal and grey in your ornaments to add interest. Some artwork, either black and white photos or colored canvas would work well on the walls.
