How do people want to decorate: would you put up a modern print of typography, a more personal print, a painting, photography or do you prefer nothing on your walls?

Comments (23)As I'm just experiencing my first walk in pantry I would put that top. When I can get back into my favourite clothes after shedding a few kilo's that might change and the walk in robe may take top spot. Here's an idea though... We also built a walk in linen / storage room in our new home to hide away all the bulky stuff and spare linens every home has. Comments (20)As others have said, it depends on your environment and view. If the house is located in a particularly hostile environment (e.g. west coast Tasmania, central Australian desert) or experiences wild swings between the seasons (e.g. Snowy Mountains) then windows are your friend. In temperate / sub tropical areas like Brisbane then verandahs are the way to go. Windows can have great thermal properties IF they're double glazed which has better insulation properties than say walls in a QLDer house with a timber stud frame sandwiched between weatherboards and VJs. Comments (8)And in the storms last week, we had a 24 hour blackout!! I'm with wuff - just how simple is simple. I think there is quite a bit of difference between labour saving devices and technology now. Labour saving devices became more and more essential as our lives got busier, women were freed from the drudgery of housework and given encouragement and the freedom to grow, seek out careers and a life outside the home. In many ways, I feel technology is putting us back in our homes and not encouraging us to explore the outside world. We are letting too much technology take over our lives and we are not interacting with people like we did in the old days. The other disadvantage with technology is its continual need to be updated and upgraded which can not only be expensive but also requires constant learning. Take TVs for example - in the olden days you bought a set plugged it in and that was it, now they have to be specially installed and set up and for the average person to know how to do this and understand it is not easy. Older people are being disadvantaged by all this technology too, they were not raised with it like the young ones today so it is constant learning, even learning a whole new language, and quite frankly there comes a time in life when head space just reaches saturation point....See More

PRO8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoGood photography and artwork really does have the ability not only add interest but transport the viewer somewhere other than the room. .. If only briefly. It can camouflage a small room into a room without boundaries and make more comprehensive statements about you than many other elements of a room can.
Of course, books and items on shelves and tables can hold equal sway, but minimalist walls? ... I'm not sure what impression they leave a visitor other than that of desert sands bereft of footprints. (imho)
