Would you consider building a home using Passive Solar Design?
Comments (50)After I had finished my Archi Masters I was working for an architecture firm who also did a small amount of work for a volume builder. They were actually a pretty good quality builder and at least got the orientation of their 'pre-designed' plans correct. We had the ability to make minor changes to every job and it pained me to see so many simple to implement passive options not being incorporated. Had most of their clients known that they would be saving MONEY over the longterm by making a few minor changes to suit their site, they all would have done it. The problem is unless someone can sell this idea to them as a financial/lifestyle choice, many just think it is about saving the world. It is a no-brainer if you have in interest in it, but for those who don't know, there is no-one there selling it to them, especially on the lower end of the market....See MoreGlass splashbacks - yay or nay?
Comments (85)It must depend what you cook. I don't do fried, spitty type dishes and the grout around the largish tiles in my now 10 year old kitchen is as good as new. I rubbed car wax into the freshly laid grout lines, same as I did in the bathroom. It also depends on how much light bounces around your kitchen, glass being so reflective shows up smears with light on it. Just above the kettle in the first photo is a good example. Each to their own, I'm a non-glass girl whenever I can get away with it....See MoreOliveri or Franke sinks?
Comments (55)Hi all, great post. Hard to find alot of reviews in kitchen sinks. Ive been looking at oliveri sinks to. Got nervous due to bad reviews. @Azur Farrell I went and looked at ABI on the goldcoast. Very helpful and sales pitch was great. The lady there had installed two gunmetal sinks in her home and said she was more than happy. For me the sinks was not quite the right size. She did tell me that the colour was 3/4 the way thru. ?? This might make scratches less obvious. I need to do more research on this as its only natural that your sink will get a scratch or two over x amount of years. I had More or less decided on the spectra in gun metal. (Wanted a bigger bowl). Did you get yours Azur? Im wonder if its scratches easily. Given its only 1.2mm coating im concerned it will be more obvious. (As opposed to stainless steel) FYI A sale lady told me that Abey pulled their gunmetal sink off the market. She wasn’t sure why but they where not happy with the product. If anyone can help re coloured spectra oliveri sinks i would love some feedback. As its undermount.. it wont be an easy task to replace....See MorePolished Concrete... Yay or Nay?
Comments (15)If it is a new house or a new slab make sure that you your builder knows that you intend to polish the slab so the correct preparations are done, and more care is taken in the top layers of the slab with a good even distribution of the aggregate. Polishing an existing, old slab is always a bit of a gamble as you never know what you will discover. Sometimes the polishing reveals cracks, or patchiness in the distribution of the aggregate, or parts that have been filled or levelled. I have had clients who were so diappointed with the rustic, patchy nature of their old slab once it had been polished that they ended up tiling it with a concrete-look tile, which provided a much more consistant finish. But the process of polishing then tiling was very expensive!...See Moretelperien
