A lot of the time they build a core filled concrete block wall then construct another stone wall against it. The concrete block wall takes the job of retaining while the stone is for looks only. It does depend on what purpose the wall is performing. For example a retaining wall higher than 600mm (usually) needs engineering by a structural engineer which is easier to achieve with core filled concrete block on footings rather than just solid stone. You never mentioned the purpose of the wall which is a vital detail as there can be numerous ways to achieve similar outcomes.

Hi, I know this is a long time after your first notes but I can't help but comment. I love the idea of the shallow wall that goes to the ceiling with a ladder. We lived in a home where the refrigerator was outside on the porch due to lack of space. With very few cupboards, I did a couple shelving units built between studs like that. I measured the height of each shelf away from the one above it with my canned foods. Turned out great and it is amazing how much those 2 little shelves could hold. I also want to say that I don't know building codes in your country but I agree that you should get at least 3 other quotes. With a concrete wall you can put electrical in that area. You can just have them use metal, electrical conduit. It does show (toe kick works, too!) but it is very non-invasive and should be cheaper. I really love the kitchen that Edith Martins posted. It is such a little gem. I can just picture myself working in that lovely place. Go slowly with your renovations. Listen to all thoughts and suggestions. In the end, this is your money you are spending and your home, so be sure to do what makes you happy. Lastly, there is NO box that you have to work within. Look online, watch Tiny House shows, go to architectural websites for ideas. Do YOUR thing. And, please post pictures when you are done! Best.

The latest update! The demolition work commences on Monday. My budget has now blown out to about $14K,including everything however I think it's going to look great. My plumber and tiler are great tradesmen, and I am going to get quality fittings (on clearance from Tradelink!). My vanity does have drawers, however I had to make the compromise due to the cost and time for it to travel to WA. I have also increased the size of the shower to 900wide and the shower screen is 1160 as I am not getting it custom made (and saving $1100 in the process). The plumber has said as I need to remove and replace some of the walls, he can do an inset in the shower for shampoo/conditioner etc.and in inset/step at the bottom for shaving legs. Can anyone recommend if I should do it, and if so, what size the inset should be and how high it should be from the ground? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi Kristin, Unfortunately there's not a simple answer for this one way or the other. Generally 2 storey will cost more, but the cost of a simple two storey design compared to a complex/high quality single storey of similar floor area could be less. It really depends upon the design and level of finish/detail. Cost/m2 rationalising really only works for volume industry where there is relatively quantifiable correlation in this regard.
