Demolishing a Carport. Cost??

Hello wise people,

As part of my renovation I am looking at demolishing a carport in my back area. The idea here is to leave the space open and allow more light in...but to have this as a car parking space should it be required.

The carport is essentially a wooden (weatherboarded) roof structure sitting on six metal posts. Underneath the structure is a small storage shed. The total area encompassed by the roof is approximately 6.6m x 6.3m.

My question here is...how much should the demolish cost?...and cant anyone recommend a person to do the demolish in Melbourne.

given the time and assuming no asbestos and after any electrical and water connections have been removed i'd be quite happy to undertake this demolition myself or hire a handyperson for a few days labour and would expect the biggest costs would be labour say $500 per day, hire suitable tools to cut steel posts and nails, screws, roofing and timber into manageable lengths and break up slab if necessary plus fees to be rid of the rubbish (hire a skip from about $250pw)..say at least least $2000+ to take care of all the work myself but you should be able to locate a specialist demoltion company that would be able to demolish and arrange for recyclying of any useful materials...ask your builder for a recommendation

Thank you for your perspective oklouise.

Im really not interested in doing it myself. I simply dont have the skill...or inclination. On the other side, the builder is quoting about $6500 for the total work including demolition permit and cleanup. My feeling is that this is too high....hence my question here.

We are doing serious renovations at the moment on 2 properties and I cant tell you how expensive this is to replicate (actually I can as I have the quotes).... You are ahead already with this in place. As others said soften it with trellis, perhaps get a concrete cutter in to cut a few strategic holes in the concrete near the posts but not too near as these have been concreted in to secure the posts. Plant it with something evergreen, non deciduous, easy care. It will be amazing and such a feature for on selling. Fab!!

the parapet (the flat wall sticking up on front of the garage) is sloping down and should look horizontal..if you add some fascia the same colour as the fascia on on the main roof it would look straight and widen the horizontal line and improve the look of the building and consider a lighter coloured garage door but, the cottage look with central path conflicts with the original style of the home...consider a simple horizontal slatted fence (painted to match the new lighter coloured garage door or white to match ethe trim on the house with a side gate off the driveway with a diagonal or curved path to the front door .. a front fence and garden always looks better

I've seen this topic raised before a few years ago but never really answered to its full extent.. now that a few years have passed, who has completed an undercroft extension and what was your journey (and costs, process, any new technologies, pain points) like? Ideally in Perth but good to hear from other states too. My story: we live in Perth, Scarborough and are looking to extend/renovate. Our property is at the back of a battle axe block at the top of a very steep drive way. The front is heavily retained and is where we would like to add an undercroft garage. I know the exercise is not going to be a cheap one - chemical grout injection, plus earth works, plus difficult access. Regardless, I want to have the work appropriately scoped out and priced as I think the upside down the line will out weight the cost. To save on costs I was thinking we could not excavate all the way down to the point where it keeps the current front area level (refer to second picture.. i.e. have a 1-1.5m rise). Yes, not ideal to have multiple levels at the front but there needs to be some give and take. I was thinking the newly raised area could be a deck area which would take advantage of the views in any case.

do you need a bigger new garage or could a tandem carport and storage shed be more useful ...depends on your car and storage needs, building materials for the house and proposed new garage, how you want to use the old garage space and local climate but we need to see a site plan with dimensions of the house, existing garage and available space between house and boundaries and have you checked with council to find out what's legal including required setbacks from both side and front fences but, given the choice, i would rather have garages to the front and side of the house to allow for more backyard and less space wasted on long driveways

you need to get several other quotes, if you have concrete to be removed you might find someone who wants clean file at a cheaper price as a neighbour did in NSW, big difference in price

Just feeling 6500 for garage is high, I did a full post-construction cleanup, including soil, and that involves a full truck and 1 bobcat and 2 person for 5 hours at that price. Which is a full on job.

A carport will take only half that time, no bobcat required. No need for skipbin, get demolisher with a big truck, so they can transport it out.
