Renovating ex housing commission house. Adding some character
Comments (104)Hello Fianou, Congratulations on your charming home. I think it has so much potential. I love the idea of teal, it is fresh and welcoming. I was thinking to give the home some street appeal and to also make it extremely functional. I would see if you could afford to put a wonderful wooden deck out the front, and then I would have window shutters painted teal placed on either side of the windows to give it street appeal, if you could afford to paint the brick I would paint it in a happier white tone with the blue accessory trim on the shutters on each window and also on the roof trim to tie it all in. On the deck I would have flower boxes painted in the same teal colour or whatever colour you choose to link in the whole story. I can see it can be so sweet and charming and a real place to call home. The timber fence at the side would also link in with the decking at the front. Good luck and congratulations on buying your own home ! Woo hoo !...See MoreDoes painting internal walls add value to house?
Comments (24)Consult your agent as to whether the market warrants the spend. If you're doing just one thing, paint is better value. We spent ages cleaning marks off walls when we sold our last house and would have been better off just paying someone to paint the whole house (faster sale=more money). Re carpet, many people want floorboards or tiles now, therefore not worth replacing. Our current house was bought for a good price in a hot market, partly because the carpet had dog smell and some feature wall colours put off many people. We replaced with floating bamboo floorboards and painted the whole house off-white before moving in. Instant transformation....See MoreCharacter Villa with bad extension - should the extension go?
Comments (20)oops with the diagrams.. Note that the "shed like" part of the extension joins onto what must have been the original lean to that extends all along the original villa part. Note the pillar in the living area, that is structural. Another strange aspect is that the toilet juts out into the open plan space ( I think that could be remedied with $$s and it could fit into the main part of the family bathroom by taking out the old corner spa and putting in a smaller freestanding bath for example) . By the way, the "retreat" is actually a courtyard that could be a nice feature if properly landscaped etc. A new roof (to get a new roof line) might work on the shed like part, but the walls around the west and southern perimeters of the space are just windows/doors so I don't think they could support the weight of a "proper" roof rather than glass? Can you see that plan well enough and what info do you still need OkLouise (and others)? Thanks again for any ideas :)...See More'heritage' character DGPOs and mounting blocks on a budget?
Comments (4)authenticlightingandhardware.com are the manufacturers of the grooved bakelite GPO shown in Big Reader's posts. They are based in Queensland. Schots in Melbourne are just a stockist, so if you are not based in Melbourne, have a look at their suitably old fashioned website and buy direct! We have their white bakelite switches and points in our house. Be warned, they are expensive though - the DGPOs are over $100 each and are quite large. the switches have a reassuringly vintage "thunk" sound :) they also manufacture those classic black bakelite toilet seats too!...See Morebigreader
