Almost every renovator has a similar story to this; a small detail you didn't even consider could go wrong, does go wrong, and bugs you for the next 20 years.

Most of the time, as long as you don't point it out to every one who walks through the door, other people won't even notice.

In hindsight, I it would look better with three identical windows. But the one saving grace is that the windows look intentionally very different, rather than being slightly off.

Thanks for your input, Jess. Yes, I can imagine that these kind of regrets are a regular occurrence in the renovation process. I agree, at least it does have that intentional look.
Do you think I should even consider investing in changing them at some point?

the question is, what is best for the inside rooms/purpose. You are not the neighbours who have to look onto it every day, you live inside your house.

Hi Evelin. Yes, this is true. With the way it is now, the window is centred in the bedroom. However with the smaller 2 windows. They would look slightly off centre in the room, but I understand that it's common to have off centre windows in bedrooms. Here is a current photo, and one that might give you an idea of what it would look like with the different windows. They are really poor quality photos though, so apologies for that.

Thanks Louise. It's reassuring to hear that it is still an alternative appealing look to some. We are actually going for a somewhat vintage look throughout the home as well.
And you're right about a happy husband. It's why I'm not fighting him over changing it because I figure I'm not the only person living in the house.
My husband and I both agreed that we'll live with it for a while and if we both decide one day we don't like it or are sick of it, we'll commit to changing it. The room is basically all complete anyway so it won't be any harder doing it later if we choose to.

From internal view, I much prefer the single window in the bedroom. Where is the bed being placed?
I love your colonial windows - I would love them for my own place rather than bronze aluminum sliders! While externally it would be nice to have the 2 windows the same size and symmetrically placed, they don't look like a mistake.

I like existing. It stops it being cookie cutter and gives a human scale and some imagination. The smaller windows evokes feeling of childhood - smaller scale for kids room, maybe change in ceiling etc. but I don’t have to drive up to house everyday you do so it is your thought that is important

I like the three windows by a long way. But I wouldn’t change them at this stage. Live with it as a quirk.

Good point about the single window in the the bedroom, Liz. I'm probably going to put the bed on the right wall adjacent to the window wall. The other option is for the bed to go under the window, we have powerpoints set up for both configurations.

Bigreader, that's how I was feeling more and more lately. I am usually drawn to symmetry.
Once the whole facade and landscaping is done, my eyes might not be so drawn to it and it all might look more balanced.

Looks fine to me as is. If you plant a row of tall narrow trees on the right no one will be able to see, much less notice, unless looking right down your driveway.

Are the windows 6 small panes each , or 1 with fake 'crosshairs' ?

If it is 1 pane each , I'd take the cross pieces off , and 'dodgy' up the smaller window -- basically , make a fake frame identical to the larger window , paint inside it , including 2 of the 4 existing frames , in charcoal . It will then look like 2 identical windows at a cost of $200 !

I'm only being semi-serious btw , but it might work . . . . . . . . . . . .

Good idea about the trees, Andy. I've been thinking about how to use landscaping to mask it a little.

Hi siriuskey. We actually do plan to put a pediment up there to dress it up. Something like this:

It might just be me , but I wouldn't do that pediment , for 2 reasons .

It is designed for a gable , not an eve .

But the main reason is I think that , because it is very symmetrical but also very straight lines -- basically , the opposite of assymetrical . Even adding a vent emphasises the different sized windows , but also the fact that they aren't even centred on that wall .

One thought that no-one else seems to have mentioned -- how difficult would it be to change the small window for one the same narrower width , but the same height as the larger one ? Depending on the framing , often the window cavities have 'strengthening' , with is important on the sides ( for flexing ) and the base ( for supporting the weight of the window ) , but while standard practice is to add this strengthening to all 4 sides , in reality its of very little use or need across the top . Obviously check the council and code requirements ( or get the builders to do it when no-one is looking haha ) , but having all windows the same height but different widths is fairly standard practice .

Potty, that's a good point about the symmetry clashing. In terms of changing the small window to a taller one to match the heigh of the other, currently, where the small window is situated, from the top corner of the window to the eave is the same distance for both windows. If I took the small window up higher, it would get really close to the eave. Maybe I should see if I can push that small window right against the internal wall that separates it from the bedroom and then make it taller.

OR you could consider external awnings over both windows.. hung at the same height to disguise the different height of the windows but different widths??? ask your husband to draw an image for you both to see what it would look like

I suppose that could work, Louise. However, I'm heberally not the biggest fan of awnings.

Hi there, I think your home is going to look fine with the existing windows. Renovations and building always come with some ‘hindsight’ clarity. The colours you have chosen are soft and the window frames do not contrast too much against it. I think you will find that you will become accustomed to the asymmetry. Once you are in the house and have painted, furnished and styled I am sure this difference won’t be so prominent and will look more cohesive. Finally, a bright door colour would allow your entry to be the focus rather than windows over the garage - maybe a bright yellow to ‘pop’ against the grey. Congratulations on your new build, aim to keep enjoying the ride.

Thanks for the advice, Davincicalbourne. It's a good reminder to just relax a little. I was thinking of painting the door a bluish teal colour. Do you think that's bright enough?

This is just my opinion, your door colour should be whatever you love; to me a warmer colour would really pop against the grey and create a focal point- a peachy red, a yellow or rusty orange for example?

Please leave the gable clear. It’s not pitched enough for fretwork and it will distract from the simple beauty

Dark greys blues even black would look better on front door, than reds, imo. Red is outdated (eg remember red kitchen splashbacks?)

I think the windows look fine as they are. Sometimes the stress & cost of changing them is not worth it, in hindsight. I wouldn't be trying to already 'fix' them with tree plantings.

Thanks for your input Helen. I'm inclined toward that colour palate too. I can also see appeal in having a warmer colour to pop against the grey, and I've seen a peachy pink door recently that looked lovely. I'm thinking something like this.

Was wondering what you think of making the smaller window a feature? You could frame it and put a flower container under it as though it was always meant to be a small artistic point of diferrence. Maybe a simple awning on the bigger window with no awning on the smaller. Tried to add photo's with no success!

That blue door so nice (minus the flowers). Sometimes the more you try to accentuate or coverup a "problem" the more frustrated you get. Not sure about the little archy upper panes on that door would fit rest of the house architecturally.

Helen, yep I'd definitely minus the flowers. The actual door we've installed looks very similar to this but with brass hardware (haven't painted it yet)...
