I am reasonably good at all of the strategies suggested but the absolute main one for me is each school holidays I do one or two areas. This means about every twelve months I go back through everything and do another declutter and tidy. I find that small shortcuts taken in the busyness of life lead to a slow drift from systems. This regular approach helps hit reset. I am also a massive fan of my paper shredder and have digitised bills and books. I derive enormous pleasure from this process.

I am organised, the man I live with in my home who is a very close dear friend is not. He is a hoarder, like his mother. He accepts he is a messy person. I find it distressing. We shred over 3 large garbage bags of his receipts, bills, paraphenalia yesterday. I said, "Doesn't it feel cleansing to let go the past?" He looked blankly at me. I tried another tack, "Doesn't it feel good to not trip over yet another box in your bedroom so you can actually find your slippers when your feet are cold?" His face lit up! Yes! He replied, "Yes, I found my old credit card too from 1998, I wonder if they are collectible now? I should put it away for safekeeping....you never know, it might be worth money one day." I tried....I really did......
