Room of the Week: Classic Colours Make a Contemporary Kitchen
Although designed to highlight the view to the wine room, this kitchen can't help but shine like a jewel
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The clients wanted a two-storey home with four bedrooms upstairs to make it easier to console young children at night. However, they planned to separate the main bedroom from the other bedrooms with an open study, situated off the landing at the top of the stairs. The main bedroom needed to have a WIR and ensuite with maximum storage space. They needed a second bathroom upstairs to service the other bedrooms, as well as ample linen storage.
This meant that all of the living spaces were downstairs, including an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area with a butler’s pantry and adjoining feature wine room.

Starting point
The wine room, glass splashback (which provides a view to the wine room) and the pool were the main features the clients wanted to highlight, so the kitchen was designed to be streamlined, simple and smart to ensure it didn’t detract from these. But it also had to embody the contemporary style of the home.

Key design aspects
Colour palette: Black, white and walnut with subtle spotlights and a brass feature pendant.
Materials palette: SteedForm installed large panels of Maximum Marmi Taxos in a polished finish (a kind of pressed porcelain) for the island bench, which contrasts against the dark cabinetry and Maximum Aster Moon in a semi-matt finish that sits around the stovetop.
Kitchen and Wardrobe Solutions installed the joinery, which consists of custom matt black traceless laminate, matt white two-pack polyurethane and Polytec Ravine Notaio in ‘Walnut’.
The Timber Wolf supplied a solid walnut benchtop in the wine room.

Key pieces of furniture
The wine racks (which are visible through the glass splashback) are matt black nine-bottle wall-mounted wine racks from Howard’s Storage World (no longer available). Beneath the bench that faces into the wine room is a Vintec wine fridge and Husky drinks fridge underneath.
The Aksel 4-light pendant in brass/clear is from Beacon Lighting. The replica Bend stools are from Sokol. Routleys supplied the tapware, including the feature Dorf Vixen Retractable Sink Mixer in white. Spartan Electrical supplied the 90 centimetre Bosch appliances. Italia Ceramics supplied the black subway tiles.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture
The appliances in the kitchen – a black integrated oven and induction stovetop – are designed to give a modern streamlined feel; the same notion applies to the white undermount sink and white kitchen tap.
The composition of the joinery and lighting is asymmetrical, in order to provide an interesting aesthetic and functional layout.
Why do you think this room works?
It is simple, functional and uses a classic colour combination that works beautifully in this modern home.
