A two-story addition to this historic Tudor style house includes a screened porch on the lower level and a master suite addition on the second floor. The porch has a wood-burning fireplace and large sitting area, as well as a dining area connected to the family room inside. The second floor sitting room opens to the master bedroom, and a small home office connects to the sitting room. With a location-to-die-for on Great Neck-Ipswich, MA, this perfectly perched home was desperate for an upgrade. The clients, anxious to downsize and create a lifestyle more true to their hearts, left their hectic Wellesley address behind and set out, with kayaks in tow, for life on The Neck! Once a cookie-cutter spec-home, this reinvented craftsman style, now reminiscent of Martha’s Vineyard and the like, will inspire you to rub your eyes, blink hard and say, “We’re not in Wellesley anymore!”. The selections couldn’t have been more appropriate: Cascade Blue window cladding to compliment the Seacoast Grey Maibec shingles, the simulated divided light/multi-pane windows, the nature-inspired & earthy color palette, partially paned door, tapered columns, and an outdoor (Vineyard staple) shower adorned by a pergola overhead. The understated outdoor shower only adds to the vacation feel of this retirement retreat, perfect for rinsing off the sand after a day at Clark Beach or kayaking Ipswich Bay & Plum Island Sound. About: Abandoned two years ago by a previous contractor, and overwhelmed by the challenges associated with building an updated porch respectful to this Queen Anne style home, J. Francis Company, LLC was referred to the customer by Maynes & Associates, Architects. Perched at the highest point on the North Side with a panoramic view is where Deb Mortillaro and Mike Gonze make their residence. Owners of the famous Dreadnought Wines and Palate Partners in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Deb & Mike wanted a porch to use for entertaining & wine tasting parties. Design features include reuse of original porch footers, mahogany tongue & groove flooring, a railing system that compliments the original design yet complies with the code and features a clear coated Cyprus top rail. The original porch columns were most likely stone bases with wood posts that have been replaced with columns to enhance the updated look. The curved corner has been reproduced including a custom-built curved handrail. The whole porch comes together, tying in the red mahogany floor, Cyprus handrail, and stained bead board ceiling. The finished result is a breathtakingly beautiful wrap-around porch with ample room for guests and entertaining. Testimonial: "Our beloved porch had been taken down to be rebuilt for two years before we met the great folks at J. Francis Company. We knew this porch had great potential and all it would take was the right people to make it happen - ones with vision and great craftsmanship. In conjunction with our architect, Greg Maynes, Dave Myers of J. Francis Company guided this project along with tremendous skill and patience. His creative suggestions and practical thought made the process painless and exciting. The head carpenter JK was a marvel and added touches that made a spectacular difference. We use our home and especially this porch to entertain both clients and friends throughout the year. They all have been anxiously waiting to hear that it is done. A pleasant surprise will be theirs when they arrive."

The clients imagined a rock house with cut stone accents and a steep roof with French and English influences; an asymmetrical house that spread out to fit their broad building site. We designed the house with a shallow, but rambling footprint to allow lots of natural light into the rooms. The interior is anchored by the dramatic but cozy family room that features a cathedral ceiling and timber trusses. A breakfast nook with a banquette is built-in along one wall and is lined with windows on two sides overlooking the flower garden.

The porch has craftsman-style finished and high quality carpet perfect for outside weathering conditions. The space includes a dining area and seating area to comfortably entertain in a comfortable environment with crisp cool breezes from multiple ceiling fans. Love porch life at it's best!

Traditional Backyard Verandah Design Ideas

A traditional verandah requires careful planning because it is here that you transition from the outside of your home to the inside. A roofed and open, or partly open, portion of a house, a verandah is more than just an entryway to your house. It is here you can play games, sit on a swing chair while sipping lemonade, chat to neighbours, and watch the world go by. What style of verandah should I add to my home?

This will be primarily dictated by your budget, space and overall style of your home. Typically, traditional verandahs are integrated into a home’s roofline, so they will most likely always be a pricey renovation. Flat or skillion-roofed verandahs are popular home additions because they can be shaped to fit most house plans, or extend out to other zones, like a pool, for example. A pitched/gabled or curved roof will give you more height and a more open feel, while a concave roof looks best on a verandah attached to a period home. How can I decorate my traditional verandah?

Your verandah decor should reflect your personality and lifestyle, but most importantly, how you will use the space. If you want it to encourage lounging and people watching, add a hammock, swing chair or daybed – the more seating you have, the more likely you are to use it with friends. Get more from your verandah by including a dining table and chairs, with some feature pendant lighting to draw attention to the zone. You could also go beyond seating, by adding the likes of a console or planters. If you’re spoilt with a view, you can also keep it utterly simple with just two comfy armchairs to sink back into. Add colour through wall hangings, potted plants, pillows and rugs, but remember to opt for fabrics that are waterproof and fade-resistant. If you're unsure, get help from a designer!
