Cedar doors and windows. Paint or Stain?

We've just had cedar doors and windows installed as part of a larger reno. The orginal intent was to paint them - white gloss interior and to match existing trim outside.
Now that they are in - hubby wants to keep them natural timber.
They are in lounge dining and study of a 1920's cottage. All other wood trim is painted.
I'm keen to hear opinions/ issues in upkeep beteeen paint and stain/varnish?
