The clients had built a magnificent Italianate 'villa' with spectacular views of the Santa Barbara coastline. They had assembled an impressive array of garden objects from around the world which were to be incorporated into the gardens. But the challenges were numerous. Object scale had to carefully managed in this 40 foot by 80 foot space -- The statuary, hardscape elements, and fountains were carefully separated throughout the landscape, in order to de-emphasize the disparate sizes. Objects included a six-foot high Buddha, a 12" high prayer bell, and a massive 1,500 pound stone urn. Additionally, spectacular tree specimens were chosen and carefully placed to provide a counterweight to the other objects in the garden. * Builder of the Year: Best Landscape and Hardscape, Santa Barbara Contractors Association

Lovely built dream home on a bluff overlooking the spectacular Santa Barbara coastline. Distinctly different gardens reading as a harmonious whole-was our mission! The owners had defined ten distinctly different gardens to be installed across the almost three-acre site. How were these to be woven together into a cohesive whole, which in turn would compliment the Italianate façade of the 10,000 square foot house? The gardens rendered as a string of pearls -- Each of the ten gardens was separately designed to be its own special jewel. And yet, when viewed from afar or from the grand terrace above, several of the gardens and numerous garden elements are "Linked Together as a String of Pearls" -- the White Garden, the Christmas Tree (a large deodar underplanted with white foliaged "snow"), the Theater Garden, the Perennial Border (mandated by the coastal commission to protect the bluff top from failing), the Koi pond, the Queen's Garden, the Pergola and the Herb Garden all flow in a loose chain around the perimeter of a central back lawn. This design concept drove many of the other design decisions and specific design techniques. ** Builder of the Year: Best Landscape and Hardscape, Santa Barbara Contractors Association

South Cove Residence Shelburne, Vermont This 15 acre site is located on the southern end of historic Shelburne Farms, a property originally designed by Frederick Law Olmstead for the Vanderbilt / Webb family. The site design attempts to soften the formal, classical character of the house with a minimal approach to the landscape. The stone and wood house is sited to enjoy both the southern and westerly views while integrating within the rolling agrarian landscape. The design creates a series of outdoor spaces which through classic geometry fade away into the more rugged lakeshore. A simple, yet elegant bluestone terrace bordered by perennials and a low stonewall, creates a space for entertaining on the south side of the house. Large trees of 8" and 10" caliper were planted to add a feeling of maturity to the landscape while creating a sense of intimate scale. Photo Credit: Westphalen Photography

A turn-of-the-century brick mansion stands prominently upon a 2-acre parcel of land in a magnificent woodland setting. Sculptural outcrops of native puddingstone project from the surrounding woodland, where mature oaks, maples, and hemlocks create a shady buffer between a bustling urban area abutting one edge. Water cascades from a custom lead fountain; the sounds of trickling water soften the noises of traffic on the busy nearby streetscape. A tightly clipped boxwood hedge borders perennial beds, and vibrant, shade-loving plants add texture and multi-seasonal interest to the garden. An exquisitely crafted teak panel trellis embellishes a stark brick wall; the elegant garden feels functional and balanced.

A structured urban garden nestled in the heart of Davis Square provides usable outdoor spaces for an active, modern family. Tightly crafted wood screens provide privacy from the bustling streetscape and enclose half of the garden. Lichen-covered granite blocks from Maine form a seat height bench along one edge of a richly patterned brick terrace, and an elderly pear tree shades a fantastic outdoor dining room. Native shrubs, ferns, grasses, and other drought tolerant perennials soften edges and create multi-seasonal interest. An herb and vegetable garden along the north side of the property creates a productive and meaningful use of limited space in an otherwise forgotten part of the garden.

The master plan for this south-facing woodland property celebrates dramatic topography, muscular canopy trees, remnant fieldstone walls, and native stone outcroppings. Sound vegetation management principles guide each phase of installation, and the true character of the woodland is revealed. Stone walls form terraces that traverse native topography, and a meticulously crafted stone staircase provides casual passage to a gently sloping lawn knoll carved from the existing hillside. Lush perennial borders and native plant stands create edges and thresholds, and a crisp palette of traditional and contemporary materials merge––building upon the surrounding topography and site geology.

A durable, meaningful design heals a devastated residential property bordering Acadia National Park and Somes Sound on Maine’s Mount Desert Island. Comprehensive stormwater management strategies shape new landforms, resulting in elegant grading and thoughtful drainage solutions. Native plant colonies stabilize the site, regenerate habitat, and reveal wildlife patterns. Exquisitely crafted new masonry, built from an authentic palette of local reclaimed materials, gives the garden a unified, established feel. Lichen-encrusted stone retaining walls define edges, thresholds, and overlooks, and thick slabs of salvaged granite embedded in the earth provide gathering terraces and pathways. With balance restored, brilliant seasonal drama unfolds.
