This knock down and rebuild had a house that faced the wrong way on a well established flat and sunny section. The new two-storey home is sited towards the rear of the section, so the living and outdoor areas face north.
The brief was to create a clean-lined, contemporary family home that would accommodate three teenagers and their sociable parents and have “light, light, light” – big windows to capture the sun and to bring the sense of suburban greenery indoors.
The lower level is clad in dark-stained vertically run cedar, wrapping over the north facing living areas, the garage and a blade wall that hides the living room from the driveway. The upper level is clad in crisp white plaster, and is staggered and pushed towards the rear of the site. A cantilevered section slices through one corner to hang above the entrance, sheltering it from the elements.
Inside, there are four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living rooms – allowing space for separation. Interior features include: a bold concrete stairwell with a screen of matai boards (rescued from the previous home), a sophisticated kitchen – complete with fingerprint-proof black cabinetry with bevelled handles, Calacatta Supreme Stone bench tops and a scullery with a coffee/bar area – and an ensuite with floor-to-ceiling Carrara marble-look tiles and concrete floor.

Truro is a reimagined family bungalow that blends heritage charm with modern functionality. A new rear extension opens up the home to light and garden views, creating open-plan living spaces perfect for everyday family life. The layout was redesigned to improve flow, add storage, and provide flexible zones for both connection and retreat. Warm materials, thoughtful details and a soft, natural palette make the home feel calm, timeless and easy to live in.

This new build residence was commissioned by a private client seeking a refined modern living environment defined by openness, natural light and effortless indoor-outdoor flow. Our brief included full architectural design, structural engineering, construction, interior fit-out and landscape integration, delivered end-to-end under a single coordinated team.
The home features expansive glazing to the rear elevation, creating dramatic transparency from the main living spaces through to the terraces, outdoor entertaining areas and landscaped gardens. A double-height atrium forms the central axis of the home, connecting the primary reception spaces with the upper gallery and bedrooms while maximising daylight throughout the core of the building.
We managed planning, structural detailing, project sequencing and trades to ensure the architectural intent translated with precision on-site. Stonework, joinery, lighting and glazing interfaces were developed in close collaboration with the client to achieve clean lines, concealed transitions and a calm modern aesthetic.
The lower terrace incorporates social spaces, outdoor dining, a fire pit lounge and a feature pool with waterfall edge lighting, extending the living experience beyond the interior. Mechanical, electrical and AV systems were integrated early in the design phase to avoid clashes and maintain the purity of the design.
