Coastal Style Dry Creek Crossing

A 500mmH retaining wall splits the verge and front garden into two distinct areas.
The brief was to remove all current lawn and to provide access to the side of the house.
The existing grey pebbles at the base of the existing water feature felt dark and dated, but my client wanted to keep it for its calming trickle heard from inside her office window.
By incorporating the water feature into a modern version dry creek bed laid out with light coloured rounded southwest riverstone, initiated an opportunity to split the long rectangular space into two distinct areas, connected by a concrete sleeper bridge. The new riverbed-water feature now dominates the front entrance.
Repetitive curves, distinguished by galvanised steel edging, which keep light-coloured compacted fines in place, tie the design together adding a sense of calm and unity to the spaces. Edging ensures a low maintenance outcome. Additional parking is possible on the compacted verge space which echoes the same curves from the lower garden to ensure continued uniformity.
A narrow, raised garden bed and a circular tree planter ensure balance and height variation.
The plant selection was carefully chosen for a hardy, easy care beachy laid-back vibe, adding a variety of grey and green foliage and wavy grasses. A few selected plants placed within the compacted gravel & stone will soften these large expanses once they grow. Two shade trees will provide much needed cooling in this north facing aspect while two hardy topiaries add varying height at the windows.
Additionally, a large low white bowl draws attention in the lower garden, planted with cascading blues.
To complement the fresh blue panelled exterior facade, adding blue and white flowering plants to the coastal style plant palette was key, which echoes the coastal location of the home.
